Achievement Hunter
Analyzing into the ether is how I cope, so bear with me. I'm torn between years of RT inspiring me as a creative and my deep pro-labor beliefs. It's not that I'm surprised that a company that started with a group of shit-talking friends overworking themselves for weeks on end has a toxic and immoral work culture. Personal dedication probably doesn't translate to running a company very well. But the fact that this has gone on for so long tells me that Rooster Teeth will never change. In fact, the only way they *could* change is if the company unionized. It might even have to be voluntarily approved to even begin to get fans back. This is why I think Rooster Teeth is about to be shut down for good. WBD's Zaslav has antagonized the animation industry by wiping shows off the map for tax breaks and to avoid paying employees their health care (according to Infinity Train's creator). I truly, fully believe in the democratizing power of unions, but I also know that if Rooster Teeth were to unionize to attempt to repair their work culture, they would be immediately shut down. I could also see Zaslav pulling the plug and absorbing RT Animation / RT Studios into WB Animation, as he did recently with Cartoon Network Studios. (CN is still around, but production and development for CNS merged with WBA) Side note: Expect RWBY to be cancelled. If it happens soon enough, Volume 9 will not be released. Already happened to a CN show this year that was done with production for its final season, and also "Catwoman". If Rooster Teeth can't change their culture (and let's be real, they can't), and the fan exodus sees their profits decline too far, Zaslav will close their doors. And when that happens, I hope the creators we enjoy watching form their own organization, with a moral work culture, that is even more inspiring than Rooster Teeth ever was. Lastly a note on Kdin's experience: Where companies can't change, people can. I've had to unlearn so many beliefs and behaviors from where I grew up. Even when I knew something was wrong, the people I grew up around made me believe it was okay. In general, it takes time for brains to change, but it IS possible. I don't believe the creators we're so involved with are bad people, I think they've learned bad behaviors. Based on Kdin's response to Michael's apology, it sounds like they've put in at least some work to be better. Rooster Teeth, on the other hand, has many unpaid wages to shell out—which they never will. TO YOU: It's okay to feel angry and disappointed, but at the same time, it's okay to still enjoy the videos that made you happy. Speak with your wallet. Cancel your subscription. Use an ad-blocker on their YouTube videos. But if this content still makes you happy, makes the shitty state of the world more bearable to endure, it's okay if you don't stop watching. At the very least, someone's unforgivable behavior doesn't give them the right to take away your happiness.
