This Privacy Policy explains how we collect and use your data and personal information and how you can control your information and that’s important stuff. That’s why we’ve really put some effort into writing this Privacy Policy in a way that’s easy to understand for all our users and as free as possible (OK, there’s still some) of the legalese that often contaminates privacy policies. Of course, if you still have questions about anything in our Privacy Policy, please reach out to support@roosterteeth.com
We’re thinking you’ll agree that it’s a bad idea to have surprises about the data we collect from community members or third parties about you and how we use it — that’s why we’ve really focused on being upfront about that (of course, Europe and California, among other regulators, require that we be transparent, but we champion privacy regardless). And we’ve taken steps to minimize its use, which is in many cases not required as long as we tell you about it. For example, to analyze how Rooster Teeth is being used by our Community Members and Sponsors, instead of telling you all the ways you get cookies placed on your device and ways to opt out of that - which let’s face it, a lot of companies are relying on the fact that many people simply ignore - we limit cookies solely to the category called essential cookies, called that for a reason – they are vital for a website to function correctly and enable core functionalities like maintaining security and authenticating you as a user. A big culprit is using cookies to analyze your use of the Service, where your information can sometimes get out into the wild depending on restrictions enabled by the company or by you. We use a third party service which does not use cookies or generate persistent identifiers for analytics. Without a doubt, we believe your experience on Rooster Teeth should not come at the expense of your privacy.
This Policy covers our Rooster Teeth platform as well as our other products, services, and features, which we may now or in the future offer in the form of apps or otherwise, and any advertising and merchandising efforts we may include in the Rooster Teeth platform or otherwise. OK, a little legalese: When you see “Services" in this Policy, we mean all of them unless we drill down on just one. Also, if we refer to our "Terms," we mean the Terms of Service that you agree to when you sign up for our Services. Finally, if you see the term "Community Member" we are often using that as shorthand for any user of our Services, including Sponsors.
Let’s get started with the information we collect:
Information We Collect
This section provides you with details on what information we collect: what you provide to us, what we collect when you use Rooster Teeth, and information we receive from other companies or apps you’ve connected to your Rooster Teeth account. Sometimes, we may also collect additional information, with your permission.
Let’s take a closer look at each of those scenarios.
Information You Provide
When you are using our Services we collect information that you provide to us. For example, our Services may require you to set up an account, so we may need to get a few important details about you, such as your name, username, password, birth date and email address. We may ask for a profile picture. If you subscribe to our premium Service (i.e., as a Sponsor), you’ll have to provide a debit or credit card number and its associated account information. But the key there is that we use a third-party service for payment processing. As of the date of this Privacy Policy, the third party service we use is Lemon Squeezy, a Stripe company. We will not store or collect your payment card details. That information is provided directly to Lemon Squeezy whose use of your personal information is governed by their privacy policy. Payment processors adhere to the standards set by PCI-DSS as managed by the PCI Security Standards Council, which is a joint effort of brands like Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. PCI-DSS requirements help ensure the secure handling of payment information.
If you use our Service to buy something, like Rooster Teeth merch, we may also ask you for payment (payment information processed through Lemon Squeezy) and related information processed by our merchandise partner (like your phone number, physical address, so our merchandise partner can ship the product to you, and transaction history).
You’ll also be able to provide us with information you send through or save within our Services, including content and information about that content, and content you share. We treat some of this information as private content and communications (like DMs with other Community Members) and don’t view it. On the other hand, some of the information you send through or save within our Services may be accessible to everyone (such as reviews or comments on Rooster Teeth video content). Please always be aware that other Community Members who view your comments or DMs will be able to screenshot that content, save it, or copy it outside the Service. So please don’t send messages or share content that you wouldn’t want someone to save or share.
Finally, when you contact support or communicate with us in any other way, including through our efforts to improve the Services (through surveys, consumer panels, or other research questions) we’ll collect whatever information you provide or that we need to resolve your question.
Information We Get Or Discover When You Use Our Services
When you use our Services, we collect information about which of those Services you’ve used and how you’ve used them. This helps us better understand the way our community uses our Services so that we can make improvements. Here’s a more detailed overview:
Usage information. This is information about how you interact with our Services — for example, your premium subscriptions, how often you interact with other Community Members, how you interact with our Services, such as pages visited, features used, general activity patterns, and information about the content you may provide (i.e., metadata) like the date and time it was posted and who viewed it.
Content information. This is the actual information that Community Members create or share—such as profile pictures, forum photos, gifs, videos, reviews, feedback or discussion posts.
Device information. This is information about your hardware or software, operating system (e.g., iOS, Android, desktop), device memory, and browser type.
Location information. The general location of your device based on your IP address, which can include country, region, city, and sometimes even ZIP code or postal code. If you’ve explicitly granted permissions, we may be able to obtain precise location through methods like GPS signals.
Log information. This overlaps with device and usage information but can be generally thought of as details about how you’ve used our Services, access times, pages viewed, IP address, and identifiers associated with cookies or other technologies that may uniquely identify your device or browser.
Data We Receive From Others
The last category of data we collect is information about you that we may receive from others, such as other users and third parties. This includes linked third-party service data (information we get when you link your Rooster Teeth account to another service such as Patreon, Google or Facebook) and data relating to potential violations of our Terms (we may receive information from third parties, including website publishers, social network providers, law enforcement, and others, about potential violators of our Terms).
How We Use Information
This is about how we use the information we collect. Among other things, we use the information we collect to provide you with a truly helpful set of features and services that we continuously improve.
So, in more detail we use your information to:
Keep things clicking and whirring. In other words, to develop, operate, improve, deliver, maintain, and enhance the safety and security of our products and services. For example, to make sure that our Services work with the latest operating systems and devices.
Highlight content that is relevant to you or we think you may enjoy based on the information you share with us. To do so, we use information about you across different areas of the Services in order to add context to your Rooster Teeth experience. Our goal is to continuously provide you with more relevant and interesting content. But we do not use the DM’s you send to other Community Members to personalize your experience.
Send you communications. including by email. For example, we may use email to respond to support inquiries or to share information about our products, services, and promotional offers that we think may interest you.
Provide relevant ads when you are using the Service. These aren’t ads on other third party websites, so if you’re watching something on Rooster Teeth that’s really garnered your interest, and it looks like that’s something you really like (for example, a jar of Burnie’s Bathwater), you aren’t going to see ads about that subject on other sites, at least not because of any information we’ve shared, since we aren’t sharing that information. Dot. Period. And if you aren’t logged in to an account, since we don’t use cookies or other persistent identifiers to track your use on the site, we may not have enough information to provide you with relevant ads. But if you are logged in, or if we have other less intrusive ways other than cookies to do this, we may want to use your usage information to provide you with relevant ads when you interact with the Services. Let’s face it, if you’re going to get ads, they might as well be ads that may be of some interest, right?
Verify your identity and prevent fraud or other unauthorized or illegal activity. Enough said about that, we’re sure you don’t want someone else using your account!
Enforce, investigate, and report bad actors. We take this very seriously. We don’t want folks violating our Terms and other usage policies and we need to be able to respond to requests from law enforcement, and comply with legal requirements. That’s to protect our Community Members and keep Rooster Teeth a safe and fun environment, which is of paramount importance to us.
A note about information collected by cookies. This is where most companies discuss how they use these technologies to collect information when you interact with Services in order to, for example, share your data with advertisers to use on other websites. For example, they may use information collected on an advertiser’s website to show you more relevant ads on that website. Well, we don’t do that. We have essential cookies only. To learn more about how we and use cookies on our Services check out our Cookie Policy. It’s pretty short and sweet.
Develop & Improve Features, Algorithms & Machine Learning Models. Going forward, as we come up with new ideas for features and ways to improve our Services, we may introduce, develop and improve the algorithms and machine learning models (an expression of an algorithm that combs through significant amounts of data to find patterns or make predictions) that make our features and Services work. For example, we use algorithms and machine learning models for safety and security and to prevent abuse or other Terms violations. This use may expand to personalization, advertising, fairness and inclusivity, but we are always focused on privacy — and we don’t want to use any more of your personal information than necessary to develop our features and models.
Analytics. In order to understand what to build or how to improve our Services, we need to understand trends and demand for our features. Studying data from Community Members can help us see trends in the ways that people use the Services. This helps inspire us to improve Rooster Teeth on a larger scale. We perform analytics (without using cookies) in order to identify, monitor, and analyze trends and usage. Based on this information, we will, among other things, create information about our users to help us understand demand.
Research. We conduct research to better understand general consumer interests, trends, and how our Services are used by you and others in our community. This information, along with analytics (as we described above), helps us understand more about our community and about how our Services fit into the lives of those in our community. The results of our research are sometimes used in features or podcasts on Rooster Teeth (and which will only have aggregated data across our user base and not contain any private information about you specifically).
Enhance the Safety & Security of Our Services. We use your information to enhance the safety and security of our Services, verify a Community Member’s identity, and prevent fraud or other unauthorized or illegal activity. For example, we provide two-factor authentication to help protect your account and can send you email or text messages if we notice any suspicious activity.
Support. When you ask for help, we want to get you support as quickly as possible. In order to provide you, the Rooster Teeth community, and our business partners with the help needed to resolve issues with our Services, we often need to use the information we have collected to respond.
Other Purposes, With Your Permission. Additionally, there may be instances when you interact with our Services that we will ask for your permission to use your information in a new, different, or otherwise specific way.
How We Share Information
This section explains who we share information with, what that information may include, and the reasons for sharing that information, including when we need to transfer it outside of the country it was collected from.
Recipients & Reasons for Sharing
Public content. This content may be viewed, used, and shared by the public at large on our services, including through search results. This might include comments you’ve added to our content.
Third-Party Apps. Sometimes we provide features that allow you to connect with third-party apps. If you decide to connect your Rooster Teeth account with a third-party app, we will share any additional information you direct us to.
Service Providers. We share your information with our service providers, who process that information on our behalf. For example, we rely on such Service Providers to facilitate payments or protect the services. We do not share private communications with them. We maintain a list of categories of service providers here.
Business and Integrated Partners. We share your information with business and integrated partners in order to provide the Services.
Anti-Fraud Partners. We share your information, such as device and usage information, with industry partners working to prevent fraud.
Legal, Safety, and Security Partners. We may share information about you for legal, safety, and security reasons if we have reason to believe that it is necessary to:
- comply with any valid legal process, governmental request, or applicable law, rule, or regulation.
- investigate, remedy, or enforce potential Terms and or other policy violations.
- protect the rights, property, or safety of us, our users, or others.
- detect and resolve any fraud or security concerns.
For the purposes of a Merger or Acquisition. If we were to sell or negotiate to sell our business to a buyer or possible buyer, we may transfer your information to a successor or affiliate as part of that transaction.
Integrated Partners. Our Services may contain content and integrations offered by our integrated partners. One examples is syncing users with active Patreon subscriptions to their Rooster Teeth account. Through these integrations, you may be providing information to the integrated partner as well as to Rooster Teeth. We are not responsible for how those partners collect or use your information. As always, we encourage you to review the privacy policies of every third-party service that you visit or use, including those third parties you interact with through our Services.
International Data Transfers. Our Services are processed by service providers in various geographic locations. To make that possible, we may collect your personal information from, transfer it to, and store and process it in the United States or other countries outside of where you live. Whenever we share information outside of where you live, we ensure safeguards are in place to protect the data as required by law where you live. If you want to learn more about this, see the Region Specific Information section below for more details.
How Long We Keep Your Information
In this section we provide you with information on how long we keep your information, why we keep your information, and also highlight how we may need to keep your information to comply with laws, courts, and other obligations.
We store your basic account information — like your name, phone number, and email address —until you ask us to delete them. If you ever decide to stop using the Services (e.g., Rooster Teeth), you can ask us to delete your account.
We can’t promise that deletion will occur within a specific timeframe. There may be legal requirements to store your data and we may need to suspend those deletion practices if we receive valid legal process asking us to preserve content, if we receive reports of abuse or other Terms violations, or if your account, content created by you or content created with other users is flagged by others or our systems for abuse or other Terms violations. Finally, we may also retain certain information in backup for a limited period of time or as required by law.
Region Specific Information
Depending on where you are a resident, you may have additional rights. This section provides more details on region specific information.
- Australia
- Canada
- Europe
- United States (this applies only if you are a resident of certain U.S. states that have implemented state-level privacy laws)
Some jurisdictions require that we state our legal basis for processing data for particular purposes. You can find that information here.
Who Can Use the Service
Our Services are not directed to children under the age of 13, and you must confirm that you are 13 years or older in order to create an account and use our Services. The Services are not intended for — and Rooster Teeth doesn’t direct them to — anyone under 13. And that’s why we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. In addition, we may limit how Rooster Teeth collects, uses, and stores some of the information of EEA and UK users between 13 and 16. In some cases, this means Rooster Teeth will be unable to provide certain functionality to these users. If we need to rely on consent as a legal basis for processing user information and a user’s country requires consent from a parent, Rooster Teeth may require a user’s parent’s consent before Rooster Teeth collects and uses that information and in certain locations we may need to verify age.
Updates to the Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time, and we’ll give you a heads up if we make any changes we think you should know about.
We may change this Privacy Policy from time to time. But when we do, we’ll let you know one way or another. Sometimes, we’ll let you know by revising the date at the top of the Privacy Policy that’s available on our website. Other times, we may provide you with additional notice (such as adding a statement to our websites’ homepages). If we have your email address, and the changes are substantive, we will let you know via email.
