Avatar Review

Summary
Avatar is a film about a tribe of aliens called the Na'vi who live on planet Pandora in the year 2154, humans have come to the planet to mine the mineral Unobtanium, which can supposedly help earth get through some energy crisis. The largest deposit of the mineral happens to be under the Na'vi village, and a hired military team wants to relocated them by force to be able to get the element. The main character Jake Sully, is a ex marine who was crippled in the line of duty, he was pulled into the Avatar program to replace his twin brother who was shot a few weeks earlier. The Avatar Program is where several scientists go into these pods which projects their mind into a scientifically grown Na'vi. On his first day out as an Avatar he ends up getting separated from the group and ends up in the Na'vi village. The Na'vi do not accept him at first, and want to kill him, however he is able to persuade them to allow him to learn their ways and become part of their village. He manages to learn their ways, falls in love with the tribe leader's daughter, and ends up mating with her. I do not want to give away too much of the story so i'll just tell you that after being accepted into the village he must attempt to warn them of the impending doom that mankind is going to bring to their village, and it doesn't go as planed.

Graphics
Avatar had exceptional graphics, the 3D was amazingly well done. At times i found myself forgetting what parts were 3D and what parts were not. However some things like the flying lizards, and the lion-like animal, were not as well done as others things. The parts of the 3d that I believe were the most well done were the landscapes, and the facial motions of the Na'vi, the waterfalls on and the rock textures on the landscapes were flawless, and the animators of this movie have earned much of my respect. The facial motions tell me that they must have used motion capture, which is much more commonly used now. There were few flaws i can think of apart from the ones i have already stated. Overall the graphics of this movie were almost flawless, and amazed me beyond belief.

Story
I enjoyed the story even though it was basically a ripoff of Disney's Pocahontas. Many people believe that the movie was an allegory for The War in Iraq, but I don't believe that, and I'd rather not bring politics into this, its a movie and its meant to be enjoyed. I thought that it was very well done though, I didn't understand how a planet that is mostly water has no oxygen in its air, but i will let that pass. The floating mountains I feel weren't needed, and were just put in as some way to make the battle scene more believable for who wins. I found it interesting that the Na'vi only had 4 fingers, to me it made it a more believable alien species, seeing as i don't believe all alien species would look a lot like humans. Also that is why i found it interesting that they were much taller than humans, in fact at times they looked almost twice the size. I do not thing that this movie lives up to the hype I have heard about it, and i have seen it in regular, 3d, and IMAX 3D, and i have to say its about the same no matter what, IMAX made no difference don't believe the lies. Overall I did like it, and I would recommend it.
