Winter Camping Adventure

So, I'm going to try to infrequently write about my various misadventures both personally and professionally. This is my first one.

A few weekends ago, myself and my friend Doug decided to go camping. Here's the kicker, we live in Saguenay, Quebec.

We left Saturday around noon, with the air temp hovering at around -16ºC. After a friend of ours dropped us off, we used snow shoes to go about 1.5Km into the woods and up a hill we had never climbed. Partly up this hill we ran into a kindly French woman (in fairness, they're all French here), who, after some translation issues, told us where a good camp site would be. So after about another Km of hiking with the snowshoes we found the spot. It was basically a small plateau on this hill.

So i started to set up my camp site. I used a snowshoe as a shovel to clean out a me sized area to sleep on. Next was cutting fur boughs to use as a bed, followed by using my ground sheet to make a small tent. Doug was setting up a hammock to sleep in.

And that's basically it, camp site set up we spent the few hours of sunlight we had left looking for firewood and relaxing. We sat around the fire until about 11pm, feeding it and sitting around. Thankfully in my little hooch i had some pretty good sleeping bags and was actually quite warm.

The next morning the real fun began. I woke up around 8am and was nice and cozy having a pretty good nights sleep. Before i left the tent I asked Siri what the temp was outside. -22. It was -22 outside before windchill.

So, i got dressed in my sleeping bag, not an easy task, and finally broke the barrier to the cold outside. I was not prepared for it. What followed was the fastest I have ever broken camp and packed up my kit, with Doug doing the same.

After a rather uneventful hike back, down a different path, Em picked us back up and I returned home.

That's basically it. Winter camping is cold as balls, but didn't die so go team.
