The Republic of Ireland is a part of Britain, It is not a part of Great Britain the Country, however the Island that is Ireland is within the British Isles therefore it is in fact a part of Britain.
So, by your logic then Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, etc can call themselves American since they are part of North America or South America?
