Thank you so much for having this conversation. There is so much horizontal hostility in the rainbow community that isn't addressed let alone actively discussed or rectified.
As someone who is on track to be in the media industry, I really appreciate an open and honest conversation that holds everyone accountable for their actions, but also for their responsibility to grow. Thank you for talking about this and committing yourself to be better as a company and as individuals.
Some of the points you guys brought up were awesome! I’m going to use them in the future. I hope more people stop associating character aspects to superficial attributes. Happy Pride!!
Thank you for posting the VoD for this since I wasn't able to watch it live. The one thing I want to respond to is this: Rupaul proved to the world he is a transphobe in 2012 after refusing to discontinue his usage of the T word in an offensive manner. He doubled down on how it doesn't matter, then kept using the heads of Trans people to make his money. He had more problems in 2014 with his "Female or Shemale" segment. In 2018 he doubled down about not allowing Trans performers on his show. He is a bigot and always has been. Stop supporting his bigoted ass.
@Tavyan Unfortunately the issue at hand is... RuPaul turned public opinion about Drag (and the LGBTQ community as a whole, to an extent) more positive and made the community more mainstream.
However, as a trans man, I completely fucking agree with you. I still watch drag race to support queens, but I no longer promote it and I no longer go to Drag con. RuPaul first showed hatred towards trans people, then tried to use us for profit (like everything else he touches). Even bringing in Gia Gunn was a terrible example, because she was a horrible person and not a good representation of trans people. I am saddened that someone so focused on bringing queer people into the spotlight holds such discriminatory beliefs about members of his own community, and then realizes it's profitable to be pro-trans, and then suddenly includes all this woke content about positivity of all types of people through the celebrity show and some of the diversity seen in the main lineup.
I'm torn about the whole thing. I want to be supportive of my own community, and Drag is such a huge part of it, but I don't see myself reflected in RuPauls speech of acceptance. It's. All. Fake.
As a queer RT fan I just wanna say thank you for this segment and the other stuff you've done for pride this year. I love that the company is getting more outspoken about social justice issues <3
this was awesome! I need more of this. Last year was my first time going to the Rainbow panel at RTX and having this comforts me not having RTX this year.
I love this video! Mariel said sth so true.... The journey is difficult. We're unlearning decades of social conditioning and sometimes it's going to feel like everything we're doing is wrong and people are asking too much. But looking back, we're making strides!
Also, Patrick....right on the money about allies. These pushes have been happening, cyclic, like waves ebbing and flowing. It's so frustrating! And yet again, we are trying to change hundreds of years of discriminatory laws and systems. We got this!!! Always forward, you know?
