It's been a while, but I think I'm finally ready to come back. Been a rough couple of years, & long. How have y'all been?

As far as I'm concerned, Fall started 'bout 2 weeks back. To answer RT Is Fashionable that means getting cozy, but also if you gotta go out, bundle up, mask up, & have some fun with it. These are still crazy times #RTCommunity, but I'm happy to figure 'em out with out with you.

Hey, Happy #RTCommunityDay! There's a tweet that this is in response to. Rooster Teeth wants to know, after 18 years, "Why are you here?" And they want stories. The obvious answer about what got me started, well: "I've told this story so often, it might even be true." https://roosterteeth.com/g/post/2b977792-ab6f-4aed-b851-1e2e2a2ad0b6 That is definitely a correct answer, but like in Red vs Blue, this is a very open question that can have a lot of interpretations on how to answer. So, I’m a long-term fan of Rooster Teeth because the company is still around which is how I can still be a fan of it. What, did you figure because this is a post on the RT Site that I had a LOT more to say that 288 characters so I didn’t do a tweet? Well of course I do! Why else would I not be doing a part of those big RvB academicish posts. (Oh, I also have a new/old job now, there’s a new branch of the popular bookstore chain opening up soon. I think my schedule will become both more limited but easier to predict now.) I can directly site the bigger project for this quick post. I’m here because of Rooster Teeth consistently being a source of entertainment, community, and personal advancement in my life and I stick around because of that. When I went off to college I made quite a few new friend groups but I found myself deep in the forums during an easier semester & the Chorus Trilogy. And the RT stuff popped up in my friend groups, a bit of a first. Usually it was me sliding in this Texan comedy group during conversations. But people were really interested in this new CG Anime that was coming out at the time… Before I forget to mention it again, I also wrote papers and did other assignments focusing on Rooster Teeth. It was a part of my academic life and the focus of half a semester officially. Not to mention that I brought what I learned into the community too in my analysis of the shows, the theory behind the work, and also some community management stuff. Two of my greatest friendships in college were formed around RT. Someone who I actually went down on Valentines Day to see Deadpool and the RWBY V.3 Finale with (not a romantic trip, but how things worked out). And then there’s my other buddy who was angry she had to watch RvB season-by-season for three weekends then, while complaining asked how I accomplished it over 11ish years. (I still don’t know.) So, RvB and all the RT stuff I watched too kept me very satisfied. I remember when (in college) I could not only watch all the content I wanted, but ALL the content if I wanted each day. Rooster Teeth sure has grown since those days, but don’t get me wrong, I’m not disappointed that I can no longer keep up in that way, and I don’t mean to disparage the stuff I don’t want to watch. It makes me so happy that Rooster Teeth can be so much more to so many more people. I was also following RTX closely. I really wanted to go, but it wasn’t until I got back from college and reconnected with my friend from high-school, Maddy, who Guardian-ed that it really became a possibility and a part of what I do. Because of that reconnection that RT facilitated I started attending RTX and plan to keep doing so in whatever capacity I can as the years go on. RTX is one of the first things I’ve done exclusively because it was what I wanted to do and I did it largely on my own. Buying the ticket, taking the flight, doing the whole getting around a new city by myself thing. All the RTX’s I’ve been to have been a series of firsts for me. Including the first time I walked miles across a new town in 90 degree weather in a full wool kilt and jacket (it was before that character got changed forever by the creator). I even was going to Guardian in 2020 (I was accepted) but we all know what happened. I also was introduced to my amazing friends like Johannah who co-lead RT Seattle before I was allowed to come on board (then 2020 happened so we’re working internally what we do after). There’s also so many folks I have met through RT Seattle and other RT community groups (and RTX) that I can’t properly list here, but it’s just astounding that I have such a notework of people in my life. I can also use my rhetoric-based education in my role as a community person which is great! There’s also a huge shout-out to my friends in the Oxford Comma Café, who are an RT started fun bunch of people who I can take part in any conversation with. And they’re also from all over the world which would have been impossible if not for us all coming together on a site based around a comedy company in Texas. I’m here, I’m a part of the Rooster Teeth Community, because it has been an awesome part of so many spheres of my life for this whole time (or at least the 15ish years I’ve really been in it). Also, despite the changes and the growth that have made Rooster Teeth and its content very different from when I started watching, I’m also here because I enjoy it. Rooster Teeth’s simple goal of making content that they want to see has also been a continuing hit for me all this time. There’s certainly some stuff that resonates with me more than others, but that’s me. I’ll watch what I like and I can’t argue with others watching and creating what they like. And after all these years, the digital puppetry of a group of colorful misfits still is one of my favorite things ever… Of all time. -Max/AgentWashingtub008 TAG BAG #RoosterTeeth #RT18 #18Years #RoosterTeeth18 #RTCommunity #RoosterTeethCommunity #RedVsBlue #RvB #RTX #WhyWe’reHere #StopDolphinPoaching

Rooster Teeth’s 18th anniversary. It’s a strange feeling writing about it. I can measure a lot of my life by Rooster Teeth. The company has been a part of my life for quite a while. I’ve known about it since about the start. I’ve always said my full introduction started about 3 years in. That makes this year my 15th anniversary as a fan. I hope that doesn’t come across like I’m claiming a badge or honor in a passive form of gatekeeping. I’m not. If you clicked on the website for the first time today, if you’re reading this on posting day or years after, and you enjoyed a single piece of content you have just as much a right to consider yourself a fan as anyone else. And by interacting with anyone here you have interacted with the community. Before I digress further on that, what I said about my time here was meant for context. This post will be a lot of context. What we’re doing today is celebrating. Celebrating the accomplishments of a company just as much as the accomplishments of the community. Rooster Teeth has created one of the longest running web series, maintaining a regular release schedule. Rooster Teeth has adapted and innovated digital production time and time again. The evolution of the Sponsor program is evidence of that alone. Lazer Team isn’t the first crowdfunded film but in 3 days broke records for funding. Rooster Teeth has taken risks in launching several branches, offering the opportunity for the company and creators to grow. RWBY and Achievement Hunter are their own international successes lasting years. The lists go on. As for us, the Rooster Teeth Community, aside from breaking quite a few websites just from force of our interest over the years we have attended & contributed to a convention lasting 10 years and continuing on. Every year we raise hundreds of thousands of dollars #4theKids! The Tower of Pimps has been in Minecraft & there is a bit more of RWBY in Doctor Sleep than just a corporate sponsorship. But what I think is our greatest accomplishment together just is having the community itself. It’s hard for me to think of something on the scale of Rooster Teeth and the community that has lasted as long as it has. Sure, there’s big things like the MCU, Star Wars, and Harry Potter* that are relevant for a long time with huge exposure and some cyclical ones like Star Trek and Lord of the Rings,* but through various factors those don’t feel the same. But when I think about smaller scale things, they lack the time. Rooster Teeth has been around for longer than LOST, Breaking Bad, and even The Office. All of which started AFTER RT, had their time of shining, and though their popularity persists, I don’t feel as much connection between the fans and investment in the content now. Some of that could be the continuing release of some of my favorite content, but I still think A LOT about Camp Camp and quote RT Shorts to myself and friends. I also have A Simple Walk into Mordor, the Extended Edition, on my shelf. There’s just something special about a community that has lasted so long with a continuity to it. ------- *Funnily enough these are all Cool Nerd Stuff… ------- Things change, it’s an inherent part of growth. Things are VERY DIFFERENT NOW than they were in 2003. Some of that is good, and some of that has been a challenge. This last year alone has been on its own. Bringing it back to RT, RTX@Home was pulled off this year. But there was also the reveal of some very bad goings on. I’m going to follow the trend of not naming names for the benefit of those effected by it and not giving traffic or thought to the offenders. Things definitely haven’t been perfect. That’s life. It’s unfortunate and I’m of the belief that we can always work to make things better. Before I get too dark though, I want to remind you of something. We’re still here. The RT Community has endured those and other setbacks. It isn’t a place for hate, but somewhere we can keep bringing out the best in each other. In creativity and in our day to day interactions. My favorite thing, that I work every day to hold myself to, is Be Nice & Work Hard. I have that written on my door so I see it every time I leave my room out into the larger world. We’ve been around a long time. I’ve made so many friends and memories as a part of the RT community and they have been integral to who I’ve become as a person. The positivity I hope I can just demonstrate. I approach things with a sense of humor and an analytical eye. I would say I also owe a lot of my success academically to my particular corner of the community with RvB super fans and theorists. I can do immense research and analysis of nearly any media. I wrote a whole thesis paper on RvB. (I mention this often, and more on it later.) I’ve also just learned a lot. I don’t just mean all the fun trivia from the podcasts. Having such a diverse and big community I feel I not only learn something new every time I talk with someone, but I feel good coming to anyone and asking most questions because of the welcoming people who encourage learning and working together. I can feel this getting rambly, I hope you’ll indulge me just a moment longer. (This totally isn’t just a cheap method of wrapping the post up.) I really appreciate Rooster Teeth for giving me 18 years of entertainment and experiences. I want to thank the rest of the Rooster Teeth Community for letting me count myself a part of it. I’m looking forward to the next 18 years and whatever it’ll help us make. Finally, in reference to my much belated Red vs Blue Zero finale/season review. 1) Things got really weird personally at the end of the year. I’m good, and was then, but a lot of my mind was taken up by world and personal events. B- I also found myself getting very sidetracked while writing it so I think I need to break it into two things. My thoughts on RvB Zero as a whole and the paper I kept trying to write while talking about my review. I tried to address the concerns that people have had to the new season and direction of the show. In that I had to reference a lot of what RvB has been. Including the review of Singularity I never did. My opinion of the Pizza Quest saga is something to discuss but more over I just kept finding myself essentially discussing what Red vs Blue is to me and what it has been. With 18 seasons under the belt and more to come, I think that is a discussion worth having. So, I can’t give a good timeline, but I will do a short RvB Zero thoughts post soon (spoilers, I really enjoyed it and have faith in this new team/direction) and after that I will start a much bigger project: What Is Red vs Blue? -A Public Service Analysis- That’s it, I’ve gotta get back to that live-stream. Happy 18th Birthday, Rooster Teeth. Be Nice & Work Hard -008 TAG BAG #RT18 #RoosterTeeth18 #RTCommunity #TheFuture #RedVsBlue #RvB #RedvsBlueZero #RvBZero #RvB18 #StopDolphinPoaching

I know it's late, but in my defense, we had no idea what was happening in the country after the holidays and I got distracted by a lot. However, I am re-watching #RvBZero to accurately sum up all my thoughts about the most recent season of my favorite popular webseries ever, of all time because even before some stepping away from it all it was getting PRETTY COMPLICATED*. But, let it be known that I really really liked #RedvsBlueZero and think it is not only an entertaining idea, but a great direction for #RedvsBlue to go in. And a big thank-you to the cast & crew for sharing that journey with us. *I never did get around to reviewing Singularity and that combined with points it brings up means I've got a big project coming.

After sitting on the last two weeks, I’m back (practically immediately) to talk about my thoughts and theories for #RvBZero because that really was some episode. I’ll remind y’all that I’m going to be discussing spoilers for the episode (that’s why I checked the box) but I’ll also be digging into all sorts of RvB data and implications. It’s the first time I really think a “potential spoilers” claim is really required. I’ve got big things to say because big things happened this time. Starting with Tucker was pretty good. Seeing another classic RvB character in the new style was really fun. (A quick note, it could just be the angle of the shot but I think we just got a new height reference for all you artists. Tucker is taller than Carolina & the younger members of Shatter Squad by a touch. I could be the armor. We also know Alison/Tex is canonically short, so that could explain Carolina… I’m really getting in too deep on the lore for the first paragraph.) The handling of Tucker this episode fit his character well. Funny, easily distracted, but always a good soldier. I also liked the backtalking soldier bit with a surprise Kdin. But attention is quickly pulled back to the plot, so we’ll get there too. Like I asked for last week, we got more of those orange alien henchmen (and I know that these episodes are made far in advance so my questions really are of no consequence to the production). The whole fortress attack was great. Fun action in a new space. Some unexpected pay off to the Newfield story in Duo. I love the idea of the sword fighting its own fight while Zero takes care of more personal matters. I’d love to see a deeper look into how it works. Raymond sums up my opinion of the mongoose fight. The line was cool and the fight was super well done. And because we all know these are the more important parts of the episode, Phase and East are back together (and I have words) and the KILLED TUCKER (and I have words). Before I get into all of that, this episode was another well-paced self-containing episode. Everything flowed together. I also loved the “Go get’em Shatter Squad moment.” Very Saturday morning cartoons, very awesome action movie (like all the fighting and chasing this episode especially), and very efficient at showing a growing bond between them. One more for the “Zero is a cool badass” column she was ready to fight off Phase on her own so Tucker and East could escape. Okay, let’s do the big things one at a time, right? --------- Phase 2 ----------- I am so hype about Phase 2. That’s what I’m calling her until we get an official distinction. And maybe even after because I like the pun. Getting her now, at the beginning of the second half means we have plenty of room to explore the second/whole form of these characters and there’s also plenty we can finally learn & piece together about Phase, East, and a few other elements of this season’s lore. Holo-echo, that’s what this scenario/technology is called. I’ll admit that I was wrong that they were a full Human/AI relationship like we’ve seen before, but they still might sort of be AND I was right that Phase is the “main” one. It’s also clear that this is a theoretical technology because Ray knows about them, but he claims they haven’t been successful. What it seems to be is, rather than my theory of an AI operating another android body, the ability to project a mostly autonomous duplicate of oneself that has a solid form. Unlike the Project Freelancer holographic armor enhancement, this is made up of a hardlight capable of making physical interaction which is different from but potentially similar to what the weapons and guardians are made of (remember this). The duplicate can be slightly different than the original in physical representation and voice. If this can be done intentionally is likely but unconfirmed (I couldn’t tell if East’s voice changed to Phase when she said “time’s up”). They also seem capable of developing independently, implying a level of AI that can have memory and complex reactions. It reminds me a bit of Black Box from the Halo novels. When he split himself and the versions could not communicate, he essentially had two versions of himself, and only upon absorption of the copy did he have access to the memories, though there was also a complication of gaining all these new feelings. Her calling Shatter Squad “friends” has me thinking she may not be on Zero’s side forever, however mocking it was at the time. She seems to be a bit more disenfranchised after the episode’s final revelation (but we’re not quite there yet, are we?) This would also fit the “Fast and Furious” tone and theme of family the crew has said they’ve taken inspiration from. This season’s bad guy is next season’s friend (See this week’s Off Topic for more). Something else we can learn from the revelation of Holo-echos is potentially the technology’s origin and how the guardians and the orange hench-aliens operate. Phase said it took Zero to make a Holo-echo possible. This is where timelines and truths get murky, but we can at least assume that Starlight Labs has been using some of the Ancient Alien tech to create the enhancements we’ve seen and everything else they’re implied to have created (I have a further deep lore theory I’ll save for the end of this post). Now, if it is that Starlight Labs failed and Zero’s acquisition of the alien tech and powers allowed him to make Phase/East actually work or if he is just taking credit for what Starlight created and his capabilities just let him work it better is hard to say because we haven’t seen the literal origins of East yet to place her in the timeline. But what we do know is Phase and Zero have fought and against the guardians and along side the orange things which both can physically effect the world, reacting in real time t what goes on around them, yet upon defeat disappear as if they have been shut off. I’m not saying these are the same as holo-echoes, but the definitely seem to work on the same principals. Coincidence is always possible, but in a story like this, the creators have to intentionally create every element. I also love the design of Phase 2. I really hope we get reference images at the end of the season to parse out all the little details, but giving her Phase’s visor but a full color uniform really brings home that East and Phase make up the whole person. The gold bits look sweet too, though I wonder where they came from and how Phase’s suit was physically altered by dissolving a hard-light hologram, but I’m fine chalking that up to Ancient Alien Magic Tech and the rule of cool. -------Did they just kill Tucker?------- It looks like it! And on its own, what a way to move on from the past of Red vs Blue. I’m not getting on here to be an old-school fan saying he was done dirty and complain about that. If this is how the story moves on I’ll respect it because the story seems to be going in a good direction. I think that the old characters shouldn’t just be protected just because they’re old favorites. It’d be great to see some of them interacting with the new characters in a Star Trek: The Next Generation fashion, but I also ultimately want that to serve the story. It was very quick, but if this is Tucker’s end at least he got in one final bow-chica-bow-wow. But this might not be the final bow-chica-bow-wow. There was an awful lot of attention on the sword being off. No one tried to turn it on, but that is just another instance of how intentional animation is. They don’t have to show anything so what they do show is important. Now, I see 3 complications/potential directions coming from all this. 1) The RvB crew is intentionally screwing with us old fans. If you’ve just tuned in to Red vs Blue with us, allow me to give you a breif primer. In Red vs Blue, the energy swords serve as both weapons and keys to certain powerful locations and artifacts in the Redvsblueniverse. The very presence of these keys can operate teleportation networks, power entire constructs, & even open the seal on a world-killing-plague. (It can also release a highly-potent aphrodisiac onto a whole world, but we don’t talk about that.) The check on the power of these keys is they only are put into the hands of certain individuals. When possible they are presented to True Warriors of Clear Minds, those not weighted down by things such as fear of failure, self-doubt, and several-times-increased gravity. So far the only True Warriors determined by these methods that we have seen are Tucker and Caboose. The weird standards of the Ancient Aliens may not line up with ours all the time. More on that later. The OTHER method of selection is a bit more… “merit-based.” The swords map to the individual to weild them, only activating for them. If you want a sword to work for you, YOU have to kill it’s owner or potentially just be the first person to turn it on next. Only a better warrior can kill a True Warrior. I would not be surprised if the RvB Team is just playing off of this knowledge and intentionally not turning on the sword despite Tucker being dead for some good good tension. This would work with the end of the episode to, they might not have turned the sword on yet because Viper doesn’t know how things work. But, if the team behind the season isn’t just playing with us that means… 2) Tucker isn’t dead and the sword won’t work for anyone on Viper. In this scenario we’re in than that gives us the first real obstacle for Viper to overcome. So far the game has always been in their favor, and this could be the start of Shatter Squad’s victory by the end (partial or complete*) of the season. And yes, as a long term fan I’m glad Tucker survived but that’s an added bonus of a good story. This option is fairly straightforward. -------- *At this point of writing this (midday on Tuesday), Fiona has tweeted saying that the team has seasons roughly planned out for their RvB story. 1) I’m all in, and 2) if that’s the case we can likely expect some sort of open thread or stinger/cliffhanger after this season (even a “And Shatter Squad’s career had just started” type thing). -------- 3) Tucker’s dead, but the sword isn’t up for grabs. Given Phase 2’s more interesting reactions since becoming whole, I think it would be really cool if we have a bit of an Elder Wand situation here. Phase 2 killed Tucker &/or turned the sword on first, locking it to her. Her tossing it up and down on the drive back to Viper’s base (wherever that is) and looking intently at the blade makes me think she was thinking about something particular. And since Zero didn’t turn the sword on yet, he may be waiting until he’s at the final temple, but it won’t work for him. Realizing what’s up he’ll try to kill Phase 2. That betrayal paired with the integration of her East persona and its memories will flip her from Viper to Shatter and cause a duel of Zero vs Phase 2, Sword vs Sword. That duel will last until Shatter Squad catches up with Viper Squad and we get our final confrontation, probably within whatever chamber holds the Ultimate Power. This is all theoretical, but I feel quite likely for a fun twist. Hey, I warned you of potential spoilers at the start. -------The Ultimate Power------- What is it? I don’t know, I just thought Zero and the rest of Viper did know and didn’t explain it because they didn’t need to. This revelation though, that they don’t know, is awesome and hilarious. Since we don’t know I’d say we have an equal chance that it’s something funny Zero wasn’t expecting at all* or it is literally the ultimate source of power that could allow anyone to take over the universe. We’ll see. Either way this is a great move as it shows Zero as fallible. Knocking the big villain down a peg is one thing but completely undercutting his plan like this is a bold choice I wasn’t expecting but am pleasantly surprised by. Not knowing what the Ultimate Power is also tracks with Red vs Blue. This wouldn’t be the first time the Ancient Aliens / Cosmic Powers have been vague with communicating what they left behind for mortals. Tucker is the Great Hero from the Great Prophecy wielding the Great Weapon against the Great Destroyer. Maybe it’s a translation issue. The Keys are never really clearly specified in the texts. The Dumbest Being in the Universe and a True Warrior having a clear mind are both interpretations of descriptions for the same sort of person. Translating eons old languages is hard. It’s why Shisno is such a dirty word but in the modern sense has strayed from the original meaning of “One so despicable they would alter time for their own means and screw it all up**” and now is the discharge of the leavings of something akin to skunks. We’ve had callbacks this season and a few things that flow naturally from the past seasons, but this is a deep cut and I love it. -------- *I’d risk even saying it is the sort of thing where you get into the final chamber and it says “The ultimate power is in the person able to get here on their own.” I like that sort of twist. Yes it has been done before, but there’s nothing wrong with that moral. **No, that is not a direct quote from a previous season, but a “concise” version of what we learned during the Pizza Quest arc. Now you see what I mean about translation issues. -------- Oh, and it is a further thing contributing to the division of Viper Squad and failing of Zero’s Plan. As someone rooting for the heroes, I appreciate this. --------------------------- Here at the end of another post, I’ve gotta say this is easily my favorite episode so far and I feel like I’m saying that most weeks which is a pretty good sign. I can also safely say that by this point yes, things are new and different but it FEELS like Red vs Blue and I can’t wait to see what that means for the rest of the season. Thanks again to everyone involved in the production of my favorite webseries ever, of all time.

Red vs Blue
Just jumping in to say that I'm really enjoying the bold direction and events of #RvBZero : Phase 2. I hit that spoiler check for a reason. I'm enjoying most of the whole season, don't get me wrong, but this last one is pretty damn good. And, I may be mistaken, but did we get a cameo from @Kdin ?

It’s time for an AgentWashingtub008 DUO FEATURE (because my week got away from me last week). That’s right, I’m back again to talk all about #RedvsBlue Zero’s latest two episodes, with my thoughts and theories sprinkled in. I’m going to do my best to split my thoughts on both episodes up though I’ve spoiler-tagged it anyway just in case. Duo is a fine episode. There’s things I liked and things I didn’t. I want to preface this all by saying that a lack of like isn’t necessarily a dislike. I’m giving my honest opinion, but there’s no point in just trashing things and I don’t feel like there’s anything to trash anyway. Now, back to the actual episode. So far, a lot of my criticisms seem to be about the pacing of the episodes, and that hasn’t changed much. Ever since longer action scenes & animation have been introduced into RvB it has complicated the already fine balance of a weekly series & a 2-4 hour story. Some deliver better than other. I personally really enjoy Season 15 for instance, but week-to-week watching this 4-hour meta movie play out in 10-15 minute chunks wasn’t nearly the same as watching it all together. The multiple plotlines advanced each time, but it was at their own pace and finding a mini-resolution was rare. I feel the same about seasons 4 & 7. Now, while it fits the action-comedy focus of the story we’re being told, having around half of every episode be fight scenes on multiple planes of actions and some stretching over the gaps between episodes is a little jarring. (It’s also hard to track a sense of time-scale.) Duo is the most like this. We start with Zero & Phase’s infiltration of the temple, fighting the final guardians (BRUTE ROBOT-GOLEMS WITH HARDLIGHT WEAPONS!) And there’s nice looking parallel action going on with the training fight between Carolina & Shatter Squad. But, the way these things all line up, the sequences feel a touch too long & out of joint. The infiltration of the temple started around halfway through the last episode, at the beginning of training and we can assume from that all these things are happening at once: Temple, Training, & Raymond & West’s story in the base. In this we get a nice bit of theme building with Zero and Phase working together vs One and East working alongside each other, but also with the Shatter Squad origins part II, and where as Training breaks evenly (moving from one type of action to another with a neat cliffhanger, the Viper sequence doesn’t get any small resolution. Then we wait a week, and it picks up as if they just moved to the next room. Watching these back-to-back for writing this I can say the concurrent sequences of Training, Temple, & Base run together great over the ~10 minutes they take up, but base more book-ends these events & only Training has an organic feeling break. What instead feels off is when watching it episode by episode we have the beginning of Recovery which is more-or-less it’s own thing, then half an action segment that largely feels like half of an action segment followed a week later by the last half of the same segment followed by the rest of Duo which feels much more complete/unified. If Recovery and Duo were actually split over 3 shorter episodes (maybe with some more dialogue or small jokes) and we had just a middle fight episode I think the episodes would have a better feel to them. Raymond and West’s base story fits fine in either because we have the joke-dialogue scene with a natural break to a small fight. Distinct events vs parts of one. While I’m discussing the parts that I didn’t like as much, there’s two more I can focus on. First, the dialogue and treatment of East is just a bit hackneyed. I can get someone with the story of East going for the “You don’t know me” line but it’s so on the nose & heavy that it’s hard to not at least comment upon. We’re half-way through the story with this set of episodes, & from a full-movie standpoint getting to the reveal of East and Phase’s connection makes sense, but it also had been so heavily implied all season it’s hard to say if this is being dragged-out or if it happened to quick. Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of Phase and East having a shared origin, and we don’t truly know what it is at this point, or who the original was if it’s a copy situation, but we know it is the case and we know both sides hate that it was done to them. It’s very clear in Duo and kept at the same level of clear in Encounter. When compared to the other stories & elements it just has the least finesse in its execution so far and so it stands out. Finally, I’ve been sitting on this because I wanted to give it some time, but I think it’s fair to call now. Tiny is the new Doc, if not in base color & function (3rd party recurring character that performs a service) then definitely for me as the character I’m not a huge fan of. Doc is an integral part of the Red vs Blue story and there are good jokes and moments with him as a result of him being a solidly written character where it matters. I would not want to associate or hang out with Doc in real life. I believe that he is the most significant villain the Reds and Blues have faced, but as a person he is an annoyance and coward who slinks around through life. Tiny doesn’t have those particular qualities, but she comes on VERY strong and strikes me as the kind of person who would cosplay Deadpool to get away with actively bothering other people. The very fact that I have this response should not be taken as a direct critique of Tiny’s inclusion, writing, or the performance by Brooke Olson. I’m not sure her personality has fully clicked into the dynamic of Shatter Squad or tone of RvB Zero yet, but I’m willing to wait for the full picture on this. One more thing I keep coming back to is this is a season of firsts and beginnings so I am fine with waiting for things to gain full definition. The presentation of her personality has also mellowed some by Encounter, so I’m hoping the first instances were just making an impression. Enough of those things though, let’s talk about the things I do like about Duo. I love the way One is being handled. She has a heavy drive to prove herself, but she’s not just defined by that drive. She has fun with what she’s doing & she doesn’t make trouble. She can get angry but so far that’s usually based on how other people act towards her. I think it’s super telling that despite their rivalry she put out a hand to East, not just after that fight, but after the alluded-to history of Shatter Squad. One is positive and especially compared to Carolina it is nice to see a character both proud of herself and enthusiastic about bettering herself. I also love Carolina, but her rise to who she is today was her story and I’m glad to see a new one being told even if it is a nod and a wink to her new Freelancer Mentor. The Guardian, THE Guardian, is another of this season’s great additions to where they’re taking Alien mythology this season on top of being an awesome fight. One of the better non-direct exposition elements is Phase and Zero don’t have to say “go for the cores” it is just explicit that it’s where the power and AI are held. Then we get the sword. I’m really enjoying that these keys have a sense of scale to them as Zero gathers more of them and goes deeper down the well a la how we have been told Locus went on his own particular journey as a Great Warrior. The fact that it either reacted to or needed his suit power (& whatever ancient alien tech they based it on (an old trick from all of the programs like Project Freelancer)) when gaining mastery over the broadsword like key is a nice part of the story. While we’re on Viper, a little bit of theory crafting their mid-episode interaction lead to is that I’m leaning towards Phase being the original or dominant one between her and East. “How’s your echo.” “It can last a few days.” Makes me think that it is even possible Phase is projecting her somehow with some control or active element and fair amount of “auto-pilot” thrown in. Even deeper in, could they have formed an AI and kept the original host alive? Is that what they (East & Phase) want revenge for? A surviving body and mind from that could potentially necessitate a lot of cybernetic supplementation to their body… It’s something to still think about. For all I said about the dialog around this situation, I do enjoy that we know they’re connected but the nature of their connection is the real question/puzzle. I just love West & Raymond’s part of the episode. After all that has changed, some of the most engaging parts of Red vs Blue is the interaction of different personality types while they fumble through a quest together. Raymond’s lines are a little cheesey here and there, but he’s saying them sincerely & West is just as staunch a straight man to make them work. Speaking of working together well, a highlight moment of the episode was Raymond coming in with the Rocket Launcher. His background still very much interests me & while it makes sense with his character that he’d grab a big weapon, it wasn’t my first thought for him and speaks to something a bit more capable in him. Shatter Squad has the kind of Dynamics that make for a good Red vs Blue team, but an obvious amount of successful military training that sets them apart. How didn’t they suspect getting Wash back was a trap, I don’t know, but a story where every character makes sensible and right decisions ends too quickly. Tiny gives them their new car, which is a neat new development and a look into character personalities. I’m not sure if this will be Shatter Squad’s main ride yet, but it serves them on their next mission. And now let’s talk about the mission. The back half of this episode is amazing, as is its bleed into Encounter. This pacing is really good. All of the main cast are in one instance together and what happens here is set-up and context for the bigger action of the sequence that comes in Encounter. Raymond uses the car’s “camo” function, giving an in-episode minor resolution to its introduction. Then we establish where Axel is as the fight starts (as well as that West is on his own). This, while prolonged a touch by the flashback, is a very good instance of the episode-to-episode pacing with a solid cliff-hanger off a full revelation. The flashback. I really like the flash-back. It goes to show just how tightly the web of the past weaves around all the characters. Starlight Labs and what they do connects to almost every one of Shatter Squad & Viper Squad (we know nearly nothing about Raymond and Diesel) which really tightens the narrative of this season (and what I suspect could be a 2-4 season Arc) with a common thread. It is mellow dramatic and campy, but I think I enjoy it more because 1) it is leant into with the grayed tone and pouring rain, and 2) it is a flashback. Axel’s recollection of events is probably pretty solid, but we’ve seen him act like this about a day dream of being a landscaper. It tracks. Most importantly though, it uses dialogue that makes sense. Axel and Zero use details and vagueness in a natural way, referring directly to past events in a way that isn’t like they’re explaining them to the audience nor are they playing the pronoun game to obscure the details for the audience. It’s always just enough. In another fresh twist, Axel may feel guilty about helping make Zero what he is, but this won’t be the trope of “but I regret I didn’t take the shot.” He did that. There will be consequences. Consequences revealed over the rest of the season, starting with Encounter. Before I leave Duo though, I’ll give it a verdict. Duo does a fair amount well and a fair amount not as well. The pacing being odd is the main factor to the not-as-well, but it makes up for it with character development through out and a solid cliffhanger on the end. It may not be my favorite episode, but there are things to like. With a title like Duo, the main effort of the episode is clearly on the duality or pairs. Zero & One. East & Phase. One & Carolina. Shatter Squad and Viper Squad. After watching it on loop to write this, I can recognize and respect that. Okay, now let’s move on to Encounter and the REAL SPOILERS of this post. I know I eluded to some things over the course of the first half, but if you really don’t want to know about what happens before you can watch it, now’s the time to look away. But go watch it or watch it on Monday when you can because this is one fantastic episode. Good pacing, good plot, good jokes, good action, and frankly, a perfect mid-point to the season. I’m gonna talk about pacing first again. In terms of episode-to-episode storytelling the team really nailed it here. It’s complex but contained, what it starts it gives some immediate resolution but the threads are open for the rest of the season to start. The frame of this episode going back and forth in time to show the consequences and then the action that created them kept me engaged the whole time. Then the internal things were wrapped up and we are presented with a tease of the next step. Some things were a bit awkward (One’s “No” followed by pan to Ray’s “West!” before he even moves looses a bit of the urgency of the moment for me) but I wouldn’t say any of it was awful. Despite the jumping of this plot, I had a better feel of the timeline than I did last time (mostly because of how explicit the link between events was. They were separate events, but we literally had a timeline to stich them together in a balanced way. Agent One’s good nature is an early other highlight of the episode. Things like “We’ll get ‘em next time,” and her rushing to Ray’s defense in the “now” and her “We can do this” in the “past” really solidify her as a cool hero. Fiona has great delivery too, having both a hot head and a good attitude come through when they need to. The action in this episode is really awesome. All of the fight with Phase is amazing and the rest of the chase sequence is good too, but the melding of narrative, character, and some action in the 3v1 of Shatter Squad and Zero is how you give the villain a victory for the heroes to rise from. It’s not long and all the cool bits come from Zero while he monologues because he can. He’s that much stronger so his confidence is earned. The smugness he has during this and interacting with Phase “after” also is the most personality we’ve gotten out of him so far and it works. Speaking of Zero’s power though, he can summon… [looks at Halo wiki] “Promethian-“ looking grunt-soldiers / henchmen now. That’s cool, but I would have liked a better introduction of that, even he just raised his hands and they appeared. I’m fine with leaving it up to the rest of the season to clarify, but where those orange robot constructs (they kind of look like my favorite D&D monster, the nothic) came from I hope we see later. Or they get used later too. Did he get them when he got the broadsword key? Has he always had them? It feels like a nitpick in an 11 minute episode, but was that ever explained or even intimated and I just missed it? Was something cut? Between this and Diesel,* I’m curious if there was a bit of trimming we’ll learn about on the Blu-Ray commentary what might have cleared some things up, though I totally get that shows have runtimes, budgets, & deadlines to consider. What we do see of Zero’s powers is pretty cool and I eagerly anticipate more. (A flying sword that reacts to his mind!) ------- *For the people who may not know, Diesel had a previous voice actor which had to be changed later into production. It was a good decision but probably not without its own consequences. ------- Everyone else’s powers are also really cool. We got to see good use of them this episode and it fills out my list of who has what: -Agent One: General Enhancement -Zero: General Enhancement & Teleportation (And his sword). -East: Burst Step (Speed and concussive energy) -West: Shield & Armor Lock combo. -Raymond: Unclear -Axel: Unclear -Diesel: Strength Enhancement. We don’t have everything yet and Ray working on armor with Tiny makes me think there’s some new powers around the bend. The last major scene of the episode was another stand-out ending, bringing us back to the fact that we’ve got the best pacing of the season in this episode. The encounter that Encounter is built around is done, contained in this episode, but the ramifications ripple out into the rest. I knew it was about to cut away, I knew where it was going, but because I know I can’t wait to see what comes next. Aside from the inclusion of Wash and Carolina, this is proof positive that this is Red vs Blue and a continuation of the stories in that world. A “Why are you here?” conversation after Carolina waxes upon her past life even if One isn’t all that connected to it feels like what Carolina would do (because she’s been doing it for years), while also giving a nod to this being a different, slightly removed story at first. Then we’re hit with the connection. It’s not what I called last time, but I may still be right. Either way, I’m excited. We have to save Lavernius Tucker. Before the end, I couldn’t find a good place to put it in the reviewing part, but I liked a lot of the jokes and funny comments of this episode, especially the repetition of the “Carolina interrupts someone with a pistol” joke. On a plot level it is also another good moment showing us everyone’s emotions through their actions. It’s 21:00 or 9:00 at night. 12 hours since the earliest point in this episode and they had to get to the car chase & have the Wednesday meeting, plus the training before it. Everyone has been up for a while, yet Agent One is at the firing range so into it she doesn’t hear Carolina at first, Ray is tweaking armor, and East is talking to herself and wandering HQ. None of these guys are going to bed anytime soon. They were so effected by what happened that they’re keeping themselves busy & still thinking about it. Quality storytelling and all the other good elements of this episode really go to show what this new team can do for Red vs Blue and here at the halfway point I can definitely say that I’m in it for the rest and likely more. See y’all next week and a big thank you to everyone who made this season possible.
