There's the show's motto!
"It's always sex and poop. Or butts!"
I think there's a study going on in Sweden right now about accents in cats around the world. There's different onomatopoeia for the sounds a cat makes in each language and accents in those cats might be the basis for that, whether that's different ways of vocalizing or an effect of human interaction, something along those lines.
This is exactly why I feel awkward about faking an accent. If the fake American accent can sound so butchered, what do we sound like to them?
As a British person, I can say that, excluding some professional actors, I have never heard a convincing attempt at a British accent from an American. It always comes out sounding mocking, I'm sure that's not the intent (most of the time) and I doubt any of my attempts at an American accent would be any better.
Personally I always feel terrible about it because I studied in the U.K. For a semester and my accent did somewhat shift during that time into a botched mishmash that always tries to come back if I hear any U.K. Accent. I have to consciously think about my original accent and spend the rest of the time panicking I'm insulting someone.
The Science Communicator of this show in a nutshell:
I really love this show and hope they keep doing it! Sally is very intelligent and the addition of Chris brings up the humor :)
i love this show so much
Yeah me too. I wish it was longer. I'd gladly listen to a full hour podcast of these 3.
Will a version of Chris' shirt be on the RT store any time soon? lol
The changes in the British accents was from rivalries between cities. Oxford didnt want to sound like London didnt want to sound like Manchester. So the accents all changed wildly. Where as the US and Canada never developed that rivalries so the accent drifted less and mainly due to distance.
This was my favorite episode. Great topics. I sort of wish this was longer. Like 30 minutes. Like if this format could be fused with adding maybe one other person and doubling the length, it would be amazing. I always love Sally on the RT Podcast, but what I love about this show is the prep time involved and the pre-prepared questions. I would be all for having like 2 fan questions like now and then maybe adding another person from RT each week to ask their own question for Chris and Sally to discuss.
Spreading knowledge is so important. I smiled when Sally mentioned that children are more sensitive to bitter flavors, so there is an actual reason why kids are more picky. That is one of my favorite factoids.
does anyone else get creeped out when Gus stares DIRECTLY into the camera when he is doing an add read? also why is it just this show, on the podcast he does it normally but here its a stare deep into your soul so you will buy blue apron
Love this show! Keep it up guys :)
