Anime that's not anime? You mean like RWBY (at least according to MAL)?
what gravity falls be considered as? Also has any fan service host seen it?
Ya they have heard of it i remember them mentioning it in other videos, but if they have seen it all is unknown to me
"By Porter Robinson and A-1 pictures." - No love for Madeon huh?
Well, unless they just meant the video...damn now I feel like an idiot.
I never thought about what I'd consider anime before. But I guess anything animated with an actual over-arcing plot with well developed characters; that makes you feel complex emotions for said characters/plot. They brought up Avatar which I've only seen a few episodes of it but, from what I've gathered from their discussion and read would fall under my definition.
Just for the sake of counterpoint, you have shows like Plastic Nee-san and Crayon Shin-chan. They are shows that are highly episodic, no over-arcing plot or well developed characters, but made solely in Japan and for Japanese audiences.
And for the record, I believe shows like Avatar and RWBY SHOULD be considered anime. I'm just offering a counterpoint for consideration on a little of what you said.
Kinda disappointed they didn't talk about Voltron... But it was a good episode still.
Yes, I was really waiting for them to mention the fact that Voltron was the first anime series that had an entire second series of it created specifically for American broadcast, but then that is Vehicle Force Voltron which many people make efforts to forget.
I feel the people that say "Anime is only shows or art forms that come from Japan and made solely for Japanese audiences" are just snobby assholes. Anime is a medium to express emotion and art through via traditional visual like every show or musical like "Shelter" or "Me Me Me" and there is no way that the majority of Anime that comes out nowadays does not have an international audience in mind. Especially since from what I've read and talked about with many other anime fans, international audiences are way more forgiving of a show. Each season like 30 seasons start some continuations but most are new, it's a lot to get through, so I read a pull of like 10,000 anime fans in Japan across different ages and I think it was about 56% said they'll give an anime only ONE episode before determining whether to continue watching, while on the flip side I feel most people say here in America will be like "I'll give it the first 3-4 maybe 5-6 if it's going to be a long season." So to say that anime is only targeted for Japanese audiences is just a fallacy, if it's animated it's anime because anime is a medium not a specific entity.
I think that the only Japan and pure Japanese movement is mostly people who have to deal with tons of people who call all animation which is for mature audiences as being anime. So when you have shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Family Guy ( plus its spin offs), King of the Hill, and the Simpsons being the first thing people think of when you say animation aimed at adult; the early anime fans, as Gray alluded to, qualified their descriptions by saying that it was from Japan.
As a result of this some people have so engrained into their minds the made in Japan part that they cannot take a step back from their position to realized that with traditional anime having become mainstream to some degree the public in the US in general does not immediately classify the above mentioned typically crude shows as being what animation aimed at adults is defined as.
This was needed in the early years to prevent the term anime from being made meaningless within mainstream discussion. But in today's world, anime has become mainstream to a point such that even the general public knows that Family Guy doesn't have the style requirements regardless of where and by whom it was made.
You know when i realzed that Shannon was Akabane in Getbackers. I had dreams for weeks of Akabane's dialogue coming out of Wash's helmet. It disturb the fuck out of me.
Kinda sad they didn't talk about Code Lyoko. Been waiting for it to come up in ANY episode and this was it's best chance. And episodic series made in two styles of animation that also had a serialized story. Not to mention it also being French in origin.
i loved that show. it had a bit of a heavier tone sometimes if i remember correctly. i personally wouldnt have a problem calling it anime just by how it feels
Do they need to censor things if it's a first member only show? Theatre Mode doesn't.
