It was to prove he doesn't have a sense of smell in the literal sense, though?  I mean, sure, there are other ways to go about it, but most of those ways one can easily go 'yeah, no, I don't smell that' even if they did.

He probably doesn't have Olfactory Bulbs, the part in your brain that allows you to detect smell, I for one don't have those so I have no sense of smell.

He has Kallman Syndrome, a "genetic disorder that prevents a person from starting or fully completing puberty." which has the symptom of a total lack of sense of smell.

According to the RT wiki, he has Kallmann Syndrome.
