Pilots get lots of help parking the plane. There's ATC and when they get to the gate, there's at least one guy waving them in. They are given very precise instructions on which taxiway to turn down on and where their final parking space will be.
That said, the only time I find it helpful for passengers to pay attention to where we can park is in parking lots when we're looking for open stalls. In street parking scenarios, by the time they've read the sign and communicated it back to me, we're already past the opportunity.
