Traditional spelling vs modern spelling? I'm not sure there's a practical difference.

To my knowledge, faerie is generally the spelling in folklore and mythology, referring to the chaotic (and usually evil) fae in Celtic and English stories. Fairy refers to the little winged people in the stories of the Brothers Grimm, popularized by Disney.

Similar to djinni and genie, traditional folklore vs popularized by media.
