I was not sold on this generation of Xbox until they confirmed the price on the Series S.
I consider myself a gaming enthusiast (hence my being a fan of IG), but the investment for certain aspects is a HUGE barrier for console and even more so for PC. For me, the hardware cost to have a meaningful experience with and take full advantage of 4K/1440p and/or >60 fps is too high for (what I see as) a modest improvement over 1080p/60Hz. That's the main reason I haven't upgraded from my Xbox One, which I got 7 years ago now. Maybe my thinking on this will change if my disposable income increases. That said, I agree with the argument here that the Series X might be for the hardcore enthusiasts and people who work in gaming (like the IG folks), while the Series S is for the more casual gamer or budget-minded enthusiast like myself.
At this point, the specs I can find on the Series S show it to be a massive upgrade over the Xbox One, and at $300, that upgrade is looking like an easy decision. It might even be the first console I buy at launch instead of waiting a year-ish for issues to appear and be fixed like I did with the Xbox One. This might be influenced by my upgrading to GamePass Ultimate recently and wanting to take full advantage of that, and as mentioned here, that's likely part of Microsoft's strategy with the Series S.
