I got a theory! gather round and put on your tin foil hats people! so gamestop as a retailer has enough skin in the game world knows you can't price gouge gamers as a whole, so they don't, even when scarcity is rampant. I think that microsoft is trying to make sure that they aren't at the mercy of retail stores like walmart, Kmart, or Amazon because if resellers pull another mass buying spree like they did with the nintendo switch earlier this year, and there's no gamestop to act as a curb, then other retailers will be inclined to sell their consoles for way more than they're supposed to be sold for. they won't care that the vast majority of gamers don't have that kind of scratch, or will just wait until the prices go back down, they just want to make a quick buck. but microsoft would suffer since all the consoles would not be generating revenue from game sales or game pass subscription, they'd be waiting in some resellers basement to be sold on eBay for double the price. and buying gamestop is just too much of a money pit, giving a cut makes much more sense to ensure that there is a physical retailer that they can trust to sell consoles for a reasonable price. and has incentive to sell them (walmart Kmart and the rest don't care about game sales, video games are an afterthought since they sell everything else). also to note that the reason they don't discuss it is so everyone doesn't pressure sony or Nintendo to do the same, they'd rather have quiet talks to discuss the ramifications of losing gamestop. that's my theory. I know it's crazy, but it's 2020. crazy is the standard.
