I'm sorry but this episode was really bad. I learned nothing about this game except that it's a platformer.
I agree with you. I've played the game to completion and it was really fun. I was happy that it was picked but am disappointed that all they did was decribe the genre.
This went just about the way I expected it to. :c
Hooray! I recommended dust! Though I'm sure I wasn't the only one. Hope y'all enjoy! And if not, my bad. At least you're going to learn a lot of new Korean food items.
While I still enjoy these, the past couple haven't been to great. They haven't been showing any footage from the games so for the people that didn't play the game have no clue what they are talking about when describing the game. A few clips of the games would help a lot.
Gus, the graphics were up-res'd because the game was developed for the 3DS first, then ported to the WiiU a few months later, and finally to Steam a few months after that. This is the third game in the series and the previous games were also developed for portable systems first; the original Shantae game only exists on Gameboy Color. I'm not even a big fan of the series, I just spent 2 minutes on Wikipedia getting this info.
I feel like these are becoming less and less indicative of the game quality, as more and more often they arent even finishing the games. I havent played Shantae, or any of the recent patch game club games, but I know I can never really put any credit to a review of a game if the person hasnt even finished it. I understand it for games that are either too long to justifiably finish of dont have true endings, but games that are averaging between 6-10 hours to complete the main story should really be finished i.e Undertale; how can you truly judge a story centric game when you dont finish the story?
I can understand where you're coming from, but I think their comments that this is like homework captures part of the issue. I think they aren't approaching these games as reviewers, but as if the games have been recommended by a friend, which they are (or in this case, by the community). Along with there being no guarantee of quality, there also should not be any guarantee of commitment. The game club is about trying things you otherwise wouldn't, and discussing them, and part of the discussion can be "I was in over my head coming into this world, and I just couldn't make myself care."
It's the exact same as how I won't fault someone for stopping Spec Ops:The Line because they really aren't in to shooters, or, in a turn of events I would love, because the story is disturbing them. I would have issue with someone who then said "this game is disgusting, and anyone who likes it is disturbed," but that's not what's going on here. They aren't saying the story sucked, but they simply weren't hooked, which is understandable given the amount of backstory. I'm not going to hate them for not suffering through a game they don't enjoy for the sake of our amusement... unless it's Ryan playing another dating sim.
On the subject of length, I do think these are just getting shorter. The first few were averaging around 20 min, and the last five average around 11 min, but it seems to be all over the place. The ones they hated aren't always shorter (Sunset ~17 min), but I really think it has to do with how much they really have to discuss beyond genre and story (Tower of Guns ~8 min).
I guess I understand the frustration that they aren't giving a game a full run. To be honest, coming back to Spec Ops, I'd hate it if someone told me they stopped playing because the mechanics were dated, or the AI was stupid, or for any reason. But I don't think asking for so much effort in something they aren't enjoying is worth occasionally hearing them say "I hated the first 5 hours, but then the story totally came together at the end and saved it!" Portal is enjoyable throughout, as is Fallout, and Bastian, and all sorts of game club games. I hate saying things like this, but if a game can't engage me, I don't care where the story will go.
tl;dr- I get it, and I can relate, but I can't blame them for not giving a lot of time to something they aren't enjoying. Also, the episodes are getting shorter, but they're a lot shorter when none of them care that much.
Yeah man, don't get me wrong, I completely understand why it happens; busy schedules, lack of interest in the game, etc. And agreed that they arent coming at this from a 'review' standpoint, was probably the wrong term to use, they are just giving their opinions. It just seems to me like it is really hard to give an opinion other than, "I didnt enjoy it", with that style of playing. There have been a number of games for me where I wasn't hooked in the first few hours, and then by the end of the game I couldn't be more excited for a 2nd playthrough.
Its just like any medium really, an opinion from someone who only read half the book or watched half the movie isnt an informed one, as it could sway in either direction upon completion. The part I agree with is if you really dont like the style, as with Gus and platformers in this episode. If you don't enjoy the style and game mechanics, that is an absolutely legitimate reason to not finish it.
Maybe if they tried giving themselves more time on each game, rather than just shy of a week? When it starts to feel like a rushed homework assignment as they describe, you go in with a mindset that its a chore and wont enjoy it as much anyway, so possibly working to a more leniant and forgiving schedule could enhance the experience, for both them and the viewers.
I have the whole Shantae series on my 3DS and I love them the story makes more sence if you play them all
Could we get a list of games in the cylinder?
Nah... That'll just ruin the suprise each week
I picked up and played the game when it was free, one of my favorite games on the 360! It's absolutely gorgeous and the story is amazing, I can see Meg and Ryan really liking it. Gus on the other hand might hate the backtracking/platforming parts of it but it's a game I suggest everyone play!
Can't wait to see what you guys think about Dust. I can't imagine it controlling well on IOS though.
