Wouldn't want to be Marvel. This will be a tough issue to resolve. It is hard to make everyone happy.
The problem isn't diversity or even the events or relaunches, its their ability to tell people about them.
If you look at Marvel's actual events, they're not actually that frequently big; Civil War 2 and IvX were fairly big events, but other 'events' recently like Stand-Off, Monsters Unleashed, Apocalypse Wars, and Grounded are pretty limited, only effecting a small group of characters (Captain America-related characters, monsters, X-Men, GOTG, etc), and going back to 2010, they've actually had less events than DC have had.
Likewise they've not actually relaunched that much; besides the original Marvel Now and more recent ANADM, they've only had small line launches that just bring in new comics, which is a thing they've done for decades and DC has done just as frequently. Some books have renumbered during that time because of creative reasons (creative team changes, book gets retooled, book is cancelled but someone else gets a pitch for a new run for the character, etc), but that's it.
And of course, if it was just diversity that was the problem, there wouldn't be so many PoC and women-lead books that survived as long as they have, nor would white male books like Black Knight, Solo, Foolkiller, Hawkeye, and others get canned as quickly as they have done.
The problem is that Marvel really promote the shit out of stories and crossovers to the point they look like big and important events when they're actually just stories that could have been told in single miniseries' or one-or-two characters' ongoings (which is off-putting because it looks like their universe is messy when its not really), they announce every new wave as a big huge new phase in the Marvel Universe so it looks like a relaunch/reboot even though the biggest change is a handful of new books (making people think that they can't follow them easily), and they don't bother telling people about new characters and books so only people buying everything or people who have adoration for certain characters would even want them (meaning people aren't liable to pick up new books starring characters they know nothing about).
Get better press, Marvel. Your books are fine but your PR is shit.
Their PR definitely could use some help. 
No matter what their response, in this case, they were going to be in hot water. I'm enjoying a number of the new books and I am doing my part to support; seriously I have 12 subs, not including event titles. I've been pretty vocal on social about how I feel about the comments made.
To your point about the new characters, I'm grateful my local comic shop keeps me up to date. I don't peruse the Preview books, because budget... So my guys and gals make sure to talk up new titles, which is both good for their store's inventory and Marvel. Hopefully everyone can get into a good rhythm on the current slate of titles and we can all enjoy good storytelling.
But the puns were so much fun! Context does help with the situation, but it's still an "UGH!" moment. They're trying, but their "diversity" initiatives still seem a bit forced/ half-assed at times. Also all the restarts and crossover events get tight on the wallet when you want to enjoy it all.
To me, the Civil War II story wasn't that great, and the whole Steve Rogers thing... 
Then there's the frustration of situations like what happened to the incredible Mockingbird book. I know I'm not the only one who felt that, and a number of folks just stopped buying until they feel Marvel "gets their act together." Oh well, they have a big job ahead of them. Nothing good is created without a little chaos along the way, I suppose.
