Eric and Jon catch an early screening of Christopher Robin and discuss whether it hits the right nostalgia buttons and if Ewan McGregor ever draws a light saber.
As far as the message of the work/life balance being unstated in this movie, I really don't think this movie needed to be as heavy-handed as they think it should be. I would think most reasonable people would know that the purpose of "rekindling the magic" IS about a healthy work/life balance and not a full stop on adult responsibilities. Nor does the audience need to be told that forgetting this magic is "part of growing up sometimes", but that it is never too late to rediscover that joy. We know this all of this. Disney has been telling this narrative for decades. We all know how people can lose their way due to the demands of life, so I actually think the movie is better for not being as heavy-handed as they would have liked it to be by telling the audience things they can already deduce for themselves.
Sometimes, in real life, there really is no explanation as to how someone loses their way like that; if they did know, then they really wouldn't be that lost. The whole point is getting to that moment of "How did I get here? How did I get so lost?" but instead of being fixated on the past and trying to overthink your way through something inherently irrational (like forgetting what joy is), you move forward with a fresh start, a fresh perspective, and the happiness and balance naturally finds a way. That narrative has been told so many different ways that the audience really doesn't need to be told that this is what this movie is about. Instead, they are shown that narrative, so I feel this does a better job of "Show, Don't Tell" in comparison to something like Hook, where the movie tries to beat you over the head with something you already knew going in, especially if you are a Disney person.
@AceofAces007 The explanation was there, but it was nuanced and subtle, and didn't smash it into you with a huge hammer. I mean he was sent off to boarding school and went to war. Those are things that necessitate this change!
Sorry I don’t plan on watching this video. I saw the movie on Tuesday and wanted to share: I thought this movie was really fun being someone that grew up on Pooh. If you have a childhood connection you should g see the movie. It is fun and funny and the perfect movie just to have a good time. Don’t go into it expecting some Oscar level performances and plot just have fun.
Seeing it tomorrow with my girlfriend. I’m sure she’s going to adore this movie, she is the biggest whinnie the poo fan on earth. Last week was her 25th birthday and she had a whinnie the poo birthday cake. And I’ll probably like it as well. I like almost every movie I watch.
