My favourite video game movie thus far was Warcraft, although I'm definitely looking forward to this film.
So, I saw this Thursday night. I remember playing the original Tomb Raider game (and being horrible at it because Worst Gamer. Ever. Of all Time.)
To be honest, I totally went to see this because of Alicia Vikander. I read one review that said she was too good for this film. Like Angelina Jolie, she rolled into the Tomb Raider film as an Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress. I did see the original Tomb Raider film, but it was so long ago, I have forgotten it.
I enjoyed it even though I haven't seen or played the newer trilogy games on which this version of Lara is based.
Agree with your general assessments, no one is winning any Oscars for this, but I wouldn't expect it to. But for what it is, it was enjoyable. Curious to see if it does well enough for any sequels.
Oh, and for anyone who goes to see it, don't bother staying to the end of the credits. Nothing there, but just prior to the credits rolling is a nice nod to the iconic Lara. When you see it, you'll understand.
