It's always funny to me how scandalized western people get with sweet beans. It's rarely like mild reaction. It is like ingrained that beans are savory. Meanwhile growing up in Asia, sweet bean paste is a major staple in traditional Asian sweets like mooncake, Dorayaki, and Tteok, so I had the opposite reaction when I first had a dish like refried beans. It's not quite as extreme, because we have savory bean dishes as well, mainly processed like tofu or condiments like bean sauce, but it's a bit of a culture shock to eat just a goop of something for a dish
