As far as trains go, an interesting question would be is how much rail has been eliminated in the USA. Colorado has a ton of abandoned rail beds that used to run from almost any mining town for carrying huge tonnage of ore from the mines to the mill. Also there are steeper grades that you can use for rail, but you need to get creative with the situation. The Pikes Peak Cog Railway has a maximum grade of 25%. I am no electrical engineer, but with enough electricity, I am sure you could get them up pretty severe grades.
The only conspiracy I subscribe to is the next "thing" is already in existence, in that companies like Apple are perfecting the technology while simultaneously dripping out small things for maximum profits. Once the profits stop at the volume they are, boom: next big thing is suddenly released.
