Considering the fact that I have immense respect for all of you, I would possibly like to work there someday. Thanks for doing this, Burnie!
Sweet, I always wanted this Burnie Vlog to come out!
But time to get a little bit serious. Now, I'm sure we'd all LOVE to join Rooster Teeth. Who wouldn't? But we have to remember that if we only pursue a career in entertainment just to join Rooster Teeth, then we're not really interested in working there, we're interested in hanging out there. So when the day comes that we get rejected by Rooster Teeth for a job despite very much meeting the qualifications, we fall into despair and have no interest in other companies, and now we faced unemployment. Or if you actually do get in, you realize it's not what you expected, grow jaded an disheartened and after a year or two, just quit.
This is an entirely wrong mindset to get into. If you want to join Rooster Teeth, do it because you're creative and funny and stuff like that. And don't be afraid to be rejected and find your own paths, with other companies. That's just the way life is.
And some of us may delude ourselves into thinking that if you join Rooster Teeth, you can hang out with some of the Main Personalities like Burnie, Barbara, Blaine, Gavin, etc. every day. Nope! Let's be realistic here. Everyone in the company works incredibly hard to do their jobs and they're not going to have time for everyone. Not to mention that when you join, you'll maybe talk to the Main Personalities once or twice but you won't instantly become all buddy with them. You'll just be the new guy. You and everyone else will be preoccupied with work in their respective departments. Your paths might not cross that much over time. You, as an employee, and them, the Main Personalities, live on two different radars. That's life.
Now, you can maybe become friends with them outside work or when everyone's not that busy or if you prove yourself to be really good at your job and that gets you noticed, etc but remember that every one before you who joined the company was also a fan and do you think that they're tight with the Main Personalities as well? The Main Personalities are the STARS of Rooster Teeth, who got noticed because the company wanted them to be noticed and popular. What do you think are the chances that you'll also be one as well? Hell, can you guys even recall anyone else from the Animation Department other than Miles and maybe Kerry who's ever appeared on the Rooster Teeth Podcast more than once?
You got to remember that it's a job. There's a difference between being a fan and being a coworker and you got to keep a fine distinction between them. That's not to say you shouldn't join Rooster Teeth. If you get hired, congrats! But remember that if you're joining simply because of Rooster Teeth, you're not really joining at all. If you really want to join Rooster Teeth, then you got to keep in mind that you should be willing to accept that you may probably not really meet with the Main Personalities or become one yourself, just working day in and day out while unnoticed except by the quality of your work, your work ethic, and some friends in the company. Because at the end of the day, everyone is there to make content.
I know this may sound a bit sobering and a bit disheartening but I just want people to keeps things in perspective.
Thank you..
You said everything I was thinking, no amount of being a fan can change work ethic just because you got to see some of the main RT people. You are there to work first and goof off and make friends with them afterwards. If people with the right skill sets and the opportunities to live there can do it, you can do it too. :D
I doubt there's anyone here who wouldn't take a job at RT in an instant, but I think a lot of us think it's easier and more likely than it is. Sure, the company's growing, and more and more opportunities will pop up, but a lot of fans seem to think it's just playing video games and shooting nerf guns.
And keep in mind not EVERYONE at the company was a fan. Bethany and Mariel come to mind.
Can I have your shirt? Seriously...cool polo.
Burnie made some very great points and as we saw and heard from a lot of the current employees, They all worked in the field for a while and built up their knowledge base and skills. Then due to timing, interest and openings, were able to transition into Rooster Teeth. It's always in your best interest to do what you love for work so if the time comes that an opening at RT or any awesome company happens. You can go for it. Guarantee you there are people who have set out to become employees of RT and have found that they enjoy doing the work for a different company while staying fans of RT. Juane_Black_Smudge is right when they say that your drive should be for the work itself and not just to be buddy buddy with main tallent. That mind set will always lead to problems. Work hard, Try your best, and strive to be the best you you can be!
Bless your soul, Burnie. Thank you.
He listened! Awesome!
As a person trying to get into the media industry I really appreciate this video. Thanks for the advice and for inspiring me to get into this field.
I know a lot of people ask about jobs at RTX, so as more of a joke for myself, I made a resume as a joke to give to Gus when I visited Stage 5 last year. I'm pretty sure I have no, nor will ever, have any discernible skills RT would ever be looking to hire, but everything I put on the resume was real. But, the first line of it was, "Don't take this seriously. I'm not actually asking for a job." Gus said it still wasn't bad.
A lot of people probably say something similar, but Rooster Teeth owns my soul. And I also recently developed a "Give Back"complex. And at the same time, I don't exactly want to be a permanent employee. I want to give them everything I can for all they've given me, and I want to do it for free. That's why I liked being a Guardian, it felt right.
I didn't necessary treat it as a job, but acted more as a fan. And I should not have been looking at it as being a fan, I should have treated it as the job was. If they'll have me back next year, I'll make sure I do it right next time. I'll continue to give them everything I can for all they continue to give me. Next time, I won't try to use my unfortunate spotlight to get what I want. I'll try to just be a Guardian next time, not a survivor of a tragedy as well.
I think a lot of points in this video can apply to getting a job in general. If you put the time and effort in you will succeed.
One of the most important and influential vlogs from this whole series. Always enjoy these stories and hope to hear some of the full stories from first jobs and in between jobs and how you guys coped from them in the future
Hey Burnie, I tweeted at you but just thought Id put here as I am quite interested.
Would it be possible to see the same type of interview with the RT Games department?
EDDY RIVAS, can't thank you enough for The Leet World! Still looking forward to Season 3 :D
