In regards to Chris's story about the southern teacher mispronouncing "pennies"...I live in New Jersey and I had an English teacher in 8th or 9th grade who was from South Carolina (fantastic to be taking and English class from someone who seemed to struggle with the very language that they were teaching to children) and she would always do that thing where, when she would say a word like "what", "why", or "wash", it would come out as "hwhat", "hwhy", or "warsh".
One day, we had just finished a short story of some kind and she was asking about why one of the characters did whatever it was that they did. She called on a boy in the class who ended up giving an extremely basic, non-descriptive answer, which turned out not to be good enough, in the teacher's eyes. She immediately spat out the following:
"Yes, Jason, but hwhy? Hwhy? Hwhy did she react that way; I want to know hwhy?"
The sheer rapid-fire application of the word apparently broke my brain, because, from the other side of the room, quite loudly, I said, without thinking, "Yes, Jason...tell her Hwhy...", to witch, said teacher suddenly started shouting at me to get out of the classroom and go to the office.
That was the point where I responded, "Hwhat?! Hwhy?!". Followed directly by her response of, "GET OUT!!!".
