My best advice for new players is something Lawrence touched on in the video, that your mana base should dictate what cards you put in your deck, in the new standard format will likely not be able to support a deck with more than 2 colors because of there aren't enough good two color lands that are standard legal at the moment.

For Magic as a whole, just play what you find fun. That is the most important element.

New players should avoid the Ranked queue initially. Just use the Play queue while learning the game. Use unmodified starter decks to increase your odds of playing others using starter decks. You can use the cards that get added as you level up.

Also note that today, Sept 26th, maintenance is being done to bring the game from Open Beta to Live, as well as roll out the new expansion, Throne of Eldraine. Also it’s currently PC only with a Mac client in the works.

Helpful hint: Each turn is made up of multiple steps where you can perform various actions, the most basic three being your Main step, where you can play lands and spells and creatures, the combat step where you can attack and damage gets dealt, and your End step which is a repeat of your main step. It's always a good idea to play your cards on your End step instead of your Main step unless it gives you a bonus you need to use right away. That way your opponent can't plan ahead based on what you do during combat. For example: Let's say you have a couple creatures out on the field and your opponent has one out too and you have a creature in your hand. If you play that creature during your Main step, maybe your opponent realizes they won't have a chance to attack you on their turn and can choose to block your attack. If you wait until your End step, however, they don't know what's going to happen. Maybe you're saving your mana for a spell that can be cast during the combat stage that will protect your attacking creatures. Maybe you don't have anything you can play at all. Maybe if he doesn't block he can attack you on his turn. By holding off on playing the creature you have denied essential information the other player needs to make an informed decision. My biggest advice for new players is you get these token cards (wildcards) in the packs you open, or whenever you open a certain amount of packs, that allow you to unlock any card that share the same rarity (color on the cards set symbol, middle right on the card). USE THEM JUDICIOUSLY!!! Only use them to unlock specific cards you need for the deck you're building otherwise you could find yourself playing with a lesser deck because you didn't have any wildcards and had to settle for something else already unlocked.

I remember playing a black/red deck back in the day. It was fun if i could win fast enough.

I saw that Lawrence's Black/Red Rakdos deck had 68 cards. That is almost always a bad idea to have over 60 in your deck, you would rather have the minimum of 60 to increase your odds of always drawing a good card vs. have a bunch of extra ok/bad cards in there. Hope this helps.

Obligatory Pro Tip: Pay attention to how every game progresses, and you'll see how a deck has a personality and strategy built into it. Each turn becomes a rhythm, in which there are a few lines of play based on when each player feels it's strategically correct to play something in your hand, based on what you and your opponent played the previous turns/games, and eventually each of the cards in your decks. Actual Pro Tip: Look at the pretty colors, someone worked really hard to make them. Say the funny names in a silly voice, it takes some of the edge of the game. Read all the words, the italicized ones at the bottom and the ones in the top left are the Dark Souls of lore for the uninitiated. Be aware of how serious some folks are about the game when playing for money. (IRL tournaments only, I would think) If you play in a tournament, the subsequent rounds may be against people that are really good at statistics, and they may beat you no matter what time they're allowed out on a weekend. Super Secret Tip: There's either something to be learned from, or to be entertained by, in every game of Magic. Leaving the emotion out of it's outcome, and embracing the absolute metal of being a bad-ass planeswalker summoning giant elephants and dragons against demon hordes while your buddy micdrops a counterspell on someones game-winning play, you realize you've enjoined the privilege of someone else's intellectual company for 30-45 minutes without the crippling social anxiety interfering. As long as you respect that you both are playing by the same rules, almost every game can afford nuggets of joy for both parties. Have fun!
