Loved this video essay, I am thinking about writing up a further reading for other game devs who might be interested in implementing this in their own games. I have a Game Design Doc that was supposed to use the time loop mechanic in a game jam game that I never finished, which will hopefully be used in a future project.
I just wish games would stop telling people that dying a lot makes a game hard when it usually just means that the game is unfair. They can't make the game hard through proper mechanics so they make PC die in one hit and the enemies take 10. Some of the best games I've ever played the enemies have the same characteristics as the PC. A good modern example of what I'm talking about would be the Resident Evil 2 remake. I loved it and have played it ten times through at least but I can't help but think it would be better if the zombies died more easily, with say 1-3 head shots. They could compensate for this with either less ammo, more zombies or both. This would probably make the game even harder than the need to shoot a zombie in the head ten times but at the same time more fun, and more in keeping with the rules for zombies. In short, I want to die learning things, not because the enemy can ignore my attacks and stomp my head in like I'm a pinata.
