'nother great explaination video. I love these things.
I do wish it had discussed the game-play advantages between first-person and third-person a little more, rather than focusing almost entirely on immersion (which, having more of does not always make for a better game). I really liked the point about first-person being better for in-your-face action, and 3rd-person for experiencing a world and its landscape.
Great video, but the thing about that Skyrim game, it wasn't the best example of comparing first person to third person. In first person the games looks good and plays well, but with third person it looked weird and wonky, and just didn't feel quite right. The example Laurence used for GTA5 was a good one, because it showed how Rockstar did more than just move the camera around, they redid and created new animations and other assets to make the game more immersive to play. I like both playstyles, with first person it's like I'm in the action scene movie, where as third person it's like watching the action scene from the movie and getting different angles and perspectives. Great video, and thanks for talking about a cool game mechanic that does more than just change the angle from which you play the game!
Personally speaking I have always had a disdain for 1st person games, they always make me feel like I am playing with a pair of horse blinders on. And that lack of peripheral vision really screws with my brain to the point that I find myself doing far better in 3rd person than 1st. I understand shooting feels better in 1st but at the same time movement often suffers for it you end up backing into things, getting snagged on geometry etc. The game I think combines the best of both worlds is Ghost Recon Wildlands granted that game has its issues and many of them but the 3rd person movement feels good and when you need to shoot it drops you right into 1st person almost seamlessly and back out again when one needs to move, if more games used that model maybe this debate would not even exist.
flawed experiment. they only used one game. different games play differently and have different play styles. i cant imagine playing wow in first person or an fps game in third person. for some games especially multiplayer melee type games third person is almost a necessity.
if you narrow the parameters of an experiment you can achieve any results you want. they ran lemmings off a cliff for a nature show.
