Good think piece Lawrence, excellent writing. Being 25, I fall into the 'Modern' Sonic fans. Truthfully, I really don't like the newer or older games. But the sweet spot for me was Sonic Adventure, Adventure 2 battle (Yes the GameCube port) and Sonic Heroes. Truth be told I got bullied quite a bit in school and Sonic was the idea of coolness I wanted to be. Keeping in mind of course I was 11 at the time. Still, I'll always give Sonic the benefit of the doubt with the new games and wait for reviews before divulging. I was a fan of Sonic 2006's music... but that was it. The only other things I played were the Sonic Riders games (which I'd probably pick up if a new one came out) and Sonic Mania. I can't say any of the newer 3D games really got to what those 'Modern' games were going for. I liked the diversity in game play and how the story was a really crappy C list cartoon with terrible voice-acting. It felt like a cult classic movie before I knew what a cult classic was. To me, it's just fun to go back remember why I admired it so much, and who I was at the time and how far I've come. I may not be a die hard fan or a furry, but Sonic will always have a place of respect in my eyes...
Despite.... What ungodly things I've seen people do to him... Just.... A lot of things....
Live a learn, Sonic. Hanging on the edge of tomorrow.
Omg I totally forgot about the Sonic Underground cartoon! I never conected it with sonic when i was a kid... Not very bright kid or just lack of understanding of german language. I've played some sonic 2d platformer on pc and knew him before i heard about mario brothers. Cause you know mario if you had a console, but sonic you could play on pc or saw some cartoons. Now Mario is more iconic since we live on the internet more and it's impossible to miss it.
I've loved Sonic since the beginning. I love the idea and the built up Sonic universe more than the games, though I keep hoping they will get those right at some point too. I loved the cartoons and I even watched Boom, as awful as it is. I am terrified of the movie coming out, looks like it could be nightmare fuel. And as a lowkey furry, yes Sonic hits the right notes there too. Sally was probably my first crush back in the day.
The very first time I ever saw Sonic was renting a rebox movie of one of his new Sonic X discs. I enjoyed watching it, but I fell in love with the character where my favorite shirt was a Japanese Black and red version of Sonic in Sonic X until it got destroyed. Ever since I fell in love with each game, I played despite the poor overall game, even terrible like Shadow The Hedgehog and Sonic 06 at the time. Over the years he became my favorite character of all time because of how much he inspired me to live life to the fullest no matter the struggle. I still ideal him as my inspiration in my life, but I also have respect to everyone else I meet who have different views of his series. His series is an example of my life; I will never be perfect and make the most imperfect decisions; however, I live and learn to this day as I try my hardest to be the best I can be.
I liked the video showing the idea of not only the fanbase but also why Sonic is still inspired to be. I can not wait to see what Sonic has more to show later in the years to come.
Question To Sonntag and Everyone Else: How does Sonic inspire you in your life to keep moving forward? Also, What is your favorite meme from the series?
For Me: As I said: he shows how no one, every fictional character, will always be number one or perfect in life. But, you still try to be the best for you. As for my favorite meme, the Unangan Knuckles were one of the funniest, and offensive but creative memes I have ever seen. It is one of my all-time favorite memes alongside with the "To Be Continued," Ricardo, and Getting Gnome.
