Wolfenstein: Youngblood Isn't Just a Cash Grab

Is there not microtransactions that boost how much money you gather and how much xp you get along with the cosmetics?

Honestly i dont think anyone cares about trying knew things. Its about making a GOOD game. Younblood is mediocre at best and Fallout 76 is a trash fire. You cant make excuses about "wanting to experiment" when your game is boring, broken, or both.

Trying new things is fine create a new IP and do it but fucking with a beloved series is just asking for hate.

I mean, you asked the executive producer and marketing director why their game is the way it is, and they told you it was all about newness and creativity. That's their job. It's your job as games journalists to not believe them.

Technically the game plays like crap. There is no excuse for a studio that large to put out a game with less polish than an indie. Story-wise it could have used some time to develop the atmosphere, characters, and plot a little more because it made no sense. gameplay-wise, it is one of the worst co-op shooters. I find it hard to believe with so many examples of co-op done right they could do it so bad. even playing together with a friend the gunplay is worse than any other game in the series. making it worse is that you have to mow down endlessly respawning enemies like its tedious task just traveling from one area to the next for some of the most insignificant things

Hey as a rational human adult I would like to let everyone that worked on this feature know ignore the hate you are going to get for it. I can really see you all enjoying the IG content and I am enjoying it as well! Keep up the great interviews and breakdowns!

Yea the game isn't great but it was still a blast to play with my friends. Bought the Deluxe edition so my friends could play for free with me and had a lot of fun. I don't like a lot of the systems but for $40 i definitely got my money worth. The most surprising thing about the coverage for this game was how people kept saying it was pay to win or you were forced to buy micro-transactions. Those people clearly didn't play the game because there are only cosmetics that can be bought with money, no boosts. Also everything in the game, including the micro-transaction items, can be gotten for free by just playing the game. Hell there are even cosmetics that can't be bought. Overall, even though i enjoyed the game, it still had a lot of issues and things i wish were different and it definitely deserved the lower review scores that it received.

I think it’s important to try to new things. I felt like with New Colossus I was getting a little bored of the same old thing. I didn’t play youngblood(!), but the problem I have with their explanation is this doesn’t really seem new. It seems like an unoriginal reimagining of an established IP. Besides the co-op, most of the new aspects just feel like very common bandwagon slap-ons. “Let’s make it more open world... Let’s add gun customization and skins... let’s fit in some rpg elements”. I’m tired of studios looking at what’s popular and trying to mold their IP’s to fit that. I don’t know if there was a way to make a new-feeling wolfenstein in 2019, but I would’ve rather just not had one than had whatever this was. Cause if every studio does this and keeps doing it were just gonna have tons of games that are really just the same game with different assets. I feel like we already have been seeing that happen

I thought Young blood was fantastic, it's not as good as the main titles but it's great in it's own way and I had a ton of fun playing it. That last boss fight though......

Enjoyed the video. It's not black and white to be sure. To be upfront, I was disappointed with Youngblood. As a Wolfenstein fan it was not at all what I was hoping for. That said, I can certainly see the desire to try new things and continue to expand as a developer. I think there are multiple issues with games like this or Fallout 76. Players love their franchises and feel protective (and defensive) when they change or are "messed with" in any way. That is understandable for sure. Maybe a better approach is to try the new things on a brand new IP. But even that approach leads to the risk of a new IP dying off before it can get it's footing. Trying new styles/gameplay with existing franchises does give it a bit more lead way with a built in fan base willing to accept some issues that a new IP may not get. And sometimes changing may be exactly what a franchise needs (look at Assassin's Creed Origins/Odessey). Regardless, I certainly felt let down as a player but the reasoning is understandable.

If nothing else, I'm SUPER happy they brought Arkane in to help with level design. New Colossus and New Order were great, but the level design was... pretty garbage.

Young Blood is an interesting experiment in perceived value. From my perspective its most telling characteristic was its pricing. My brother and I got about 3 nights of entertainment out of $40. The decision to allow any friend to play with you for free if the owner spent the extra $10 was an interesting and effective decision. Where I live, one movie ticket costs about $12-18 with that frame of reference the 15-20 hours we have both gotten out of the game seem well worth the cost. I went in thinking I was buying half of a Wolfenstein game... and that mentality left me mildly impressed as I played it. There were certainly some issues with the game overall (my biggest being the abhorrent final boss fight). I realize everyone has their own standards of acceptable value but I'm not loosing any sleep over this one. Thank you for covering the developers side of the conversation!
