TLDR; Welcome to the Nanny Internet... (but just like nanny states, they don't last long if only because everyone leaves/grows out of it whether the nanny likes it or not).
... but then that's happened before and the result is more of the Internet becoming dark... but then more popular bits of that are becoming lighter with time and various of them are immune to some of these problems... particularly the bits that are not beholden to standards bodies or even other parts of the same network e.g. non-centralised systems such as Tor and the like (which is not exactly unusual, mesh wi-fi networks use a non-centralised organisational system for creating wi-fi networks on the fly with unstable participants nodes).
More like the battle for the WWW... or the main bits of it like stuff owned by Google, FacePalm and Apple (just need to get your kicks from other places... erm... so lots of places left to go to?)
