eSports became a sport to ESPN once eSports became a potential moneymaker. At the very least, ESPN must be thinking that if they are able to onboard some younger viewers into their ecosystem then they will be able to get those younger viewers to stick around for some of the other sports. More page views, more hours watched, more dollars.

Colin Coward was a fucking idiot but I don't know how I feel about ESPN picking up e-sports. I was, for the most part, liking Activision's e-sports network so far. I feel like ESPN would be afraid to show things like Call of Duty and Counter Strike tournaments. I also feel like Counter Strike tournaments would be censored due to some of the things you hear over coms... And that just doesn't sound like something I would want
