This is not only stupid, it's FUCKING stupid. This guy is basically saying that Microsoft would completely sabotage their own operating system in its entirety solely to destroy Steam. There would literally be no other way for Microsoft to update Windows to hurt Steam than to update it to hurt every process run on Windows. This would utterly destroy any performance the OS has, and also introduce uncountable security holes.
If Steam ever starts performing worse on Windows 10, that will be entirely on Valve for not updating their code base to meet newer standards before deprecated features are removed entirely. Considering such removals are often announced years in advance of them actually happening, failing to update the codebase would be an exercise in willful stupidity.
tl;dr: Not only is that CEO an idiot, he's completely out of touch with how the development industry actually works, and should probably be fired before he fucks the entire company he's the CEO of.
That's not what he's saying. Read the actual article if you haven't. The Know paraphrases and obviously their take on it will be colored by personal opinions and possibly even by "partnerships." (Such as Microsoft owning Halo)
Sweeney said "[...] that future updates to Windows 10 could serve to erode the usefulness of third-party applications and storefronts like Steam." It's not like they're directly targeting Steam. What they're doing is attempting to transition (it's hard to refute this, seeing as it was poorly implemented in Windows 8, was largely disliked and still managed to make it into Windows 10) into the Windows Store, which is their own locked down ecosystem. This would make Steam less desirable, since it's now a store in a store (if that would even be allowed by Microsoft and possible in the UWP, seeing as it's used to combat viruses since it's a sandboxed environment.)
It's ignorant to assume that Microsoft is trying to do good by locking down applications into their own ecosystem - especially with their recent Windows 10 fuck-ups. His points are valid. It's not to say that they are going to happen, but there is definitely a possibility that they are heading in that direction.
TL;DR: Provably, Microsoft is trying to create a locked down ecosystem that they control. Speculatively, a place where third party stores could have no place. Windows is currently headed towards a locked ecosystem, so his concerns are valid. Don't assume that the man is crazy just because you don't agree with him.
I'll just go back to Windows 8.1 if it happens. Nbd.
I'd honestly welcome this. I personally hate Steam, I only have it because that's more or less the only convenient way to get Paradox Interactive games. So bring on a more unified Microsoft platform.
at that point in five years il just switch to linux
I'll be hanging onto my Windows 7 discs as long as I can.
Wait, where did I put them again?!
That is a nice T-Shirt Gray.
I'm going to wait and see what happens.
Not worried myself since I learned years ago that Micro$oft is all about the money and nothing about the experience... hence I've been on Linux doing actual work and real things as well as some rather nifty gaming since then... that said it was nice when Steam came along since it makes it a little easier to find Linux games now... oh wait, so Steam will still have a, no two, no wait, how many non MS OS platforms does Steam run on? Enough that they might care about the volume of sales lost but not enough to kill them, especially once the anti-trust case flattens Microsoft and the market leaves Microsoft for something that actually works (be it Linux, Mac, Chrome or whatever other OS exists by then... it's not like many people already don't upgrade their stuff because upgrades from Microsoft are more often downgrades... we've even a laptop that M$ is trying to force upgrade but can't because it would break the machine (it's really old and not at all powerful) but I can no longer turn off upgrades because they patched that out so it can't go on the internet now even though it's Windows 7... watch out for those force upgrades people - they'll even make XP machines do it one of these days!
In case you don't hink it's possible check out the deal with Dr. DOS! Never mind all the other shit they've pulled... and you worry about oppressive governments *sigh*
With the kind of tactics Microsoft has used with Windows 10, it doesn't seem that farfetched.
Hopefully that means mah boi Tim will push for official/native support for Vulkan in Unreal Engine.
Boy, game developers sure like drama.
I'd say humans in general
Devs (both in and out of the games industry) are not big fans of UWP. It's very restrictive and you can't distribute software freely, it has to go through the Windows Store.
Sweeny is a fuckin idiot
Leaving aside the issue of Tim Sweeny's credibility, this news segment came across as "Somebody didn't understand the basic arguments involved, but had to write a script, so just added a lot of off-target hyperbole and false comparisons." :/
The sentence starting "For some reason it's okay that Steam does it, anyone else trying to do it..." is tantamount to saying "For some reason it's okay to take as many vegetable crops out of the soil as you want, but apparently trying to strip all the topsoil away from the planet Earth is a bad thing! What hypocrisy!" Ridiculous.
Wow, you fell right into your own argument.
