Isn't this the concept of God? i mean an all knowing and all powerful being that can do anything they want to this universe, seems kinda similar.
That's the difference between philosophy and religion. Where philosophy seeks truth, religion asserts it to control people. The difference between a godly programmer and a god would be a godly programmer would seek nothing but the program to play out while a god would seek obedience and worship. A god is a meddlesome programmer, one who inserts his own personality and will into the program. In other words, whether something is a god or simply an almighty programmer depends on how much the being claims authority over us. Perhaps the big bang was a wipe when the last simulation led to beings capable of ending the program or even ending the programmer. Perhaps maybe perchance! Indeed...
@ReckonBallZ you have a really (like REALLY) biased opinion of Religion. It's simply just the structure of faith, which is beliving in something whether or not there is proof.
@sirenite Religion is anything people want it to be, as thats what its there for, to gather people who believe in the same things. Gods themselves, in all kinds of mythologies and books where they are personified, and therefore exist, all desire to be believed in, such that they often reach out to people or prophets in order to make people believe. @ReckonBallZ is trying to say, the difference between life being created by a god and life being a simulation is that in one, the creator of the universe exists inside of the universe it created, and the other does not.
@himm I think it came off a lot more aggressive than that, and aggression in religion is a common misplaced stereotype is all. This interpretation of god vs programmer really depends on which religions the person's religious knowledge is based on.
So...if we really are in a simulation when can i use the motherlode cheat to pay off my student loans.. XD
The south park episode which "Earth!" is a reality tv show, sounds more plausible than this. :p
Let's all just hope Geoff dosen't get the controler.
I want to know where the cheat code menu is?
It is an interesting theory, and when you think about there is a possibility and all outcomes are possible
If an alien is simulating my life.....then that would mean......that the alien's life.....was even more boring than mine......and I don't want to believe that's possible.
seriously, dear alien turn me into a superhero
One huge issue with the Simulation theory is irrational numbers. An irrational number is a never ending non repeating sequence which would be impossible to program because it is of course never ending. I covered this in a first year physics lecture. But Tyson is also far more intelligent than I am so who knows. Shit's crazy.
Irrational numbers are mathematical constructs created by us to measure the universe. It is a very simple process, to divide, that a common calculator can attempt.
I am kind of disappointed that the Know did not include a single reason why Lisa Randall believed that Simulation Theory is not factual. It just seems like lazy, or biased journalism. I am sure Lisa gave a reason, but it was simply not reported on this video. I am not concerned about the Know's opinion of Simulation Theory; just Lisa's reasons. The Know's cast are not Theoretical Physicists.
They did mention that he could very well be wrong.
So the man who completely dismisses any argument of intelligent design is now claiming that the universe was created by hyper-intelligent beings, and also made a major philosophical argument that is becoming a media sensation, despite believing that philosophy is useless? For a smart man, he really is a fucking moron.
I'd also like to point out that he plays the voice of the highly intelligent "Waddles" the pig in the wonderfully under-rated Gravity Falls!
(quite well, i might add! :: )
