Let me begin by stating that none of these companies are your friend, full stop. Despite the many shitty practices that companies utilize in general, holding out on crossplay is a perfectly reasonable stance for Sony to take. What you're asking is for them to surrender a fair advantage for zero benefit to themselves. I include the goodwill of gamers in that zero because there's no benefit. It's not a problem so much as a minor annoyance, which means everyone's going to forget about it, as usual. Particularly, since it's in the middle of the console's life cycle, rather than during the release of a new one. For as long as there have been separate consoles, and as long as there will be, picking one will mean missing out on something on the other. That's fair, and that's how competition works. The only reason Nintendo and Microsoft are bothering to make a big deal out of this is because they're behind Sony on sales. If it were either of them on top, it'd be the same thing, just that particular one on the block instead. Of course, as a consumer, it IS annoying, I won't deny that, because I've ran into problems as well, specifically with Fortnite. However, this does not make Sony the devil people want to portray them as. Other things, might, but that's a different matter. Then you have developers playing the role of mob inciters to get what they want, because they're the real ones who stand to benefit from the additional copies they may sell. Because, and I'll admit this is more an educated guess than anything, but I don't believe a significant percentage of people are hinging their purchase of a console on the crossplay status of the few games that would utilize it. I'm sure there are far more prominent concerns in their minds that have lead to their choice of console.
