@Tommy_Useless Yes and No. most AAA titles dont have that kind of budget is true, but some of those companies do spend millions in the advertising budget. I think you factor everything in and GTA V was like an extra 50-100 m on advertising alone. Which i believe totaled something like 275 Mil. Not as high as this to be sure. but Ads cost.

so 300mill from 2.7mill backers means that on average each backer paid over 100 bucks for an unfinished game

@Hammlet I hope this game finally comes out. I am really intrested to see what a 300 million dollar triple A game looks like. Note I wont buy it sounds to much like Eve and I suck at those games.

@Hammlet the game is playable right now actually, its fricking huge, they've generated entire planets for exploration, and there are like 15 solar systems each with 3-4 planets and everyplanet is completly or mostly explorable, this may be the biggest game to ever exist, look at howlong gtav took to come out. if this game flops ill be the first to admit i was wrong but honestly 10+ years for a game this big isn't that bad

If a game has cost almost 400 million dollars and jackshit hasn't come out....someone should be sued and in jail for fraud

The sad thing is that the people who have given money to this project are so defensive about it. Try telling them that this game is never coming out and if it does it won't be what was promised. You'll be greeted with being called a "hater" while they stick their hands in the sand. Nevermind the ethics of selling goods for hundreds of dollars when said goods don't exist. Or they risk of pay to win with real money ships. They won't hear it. In fact telling them these things seems to make them double down and give more money. At this point the Dev's just need to stop promising more features, stop making two games simultaneously and most of all stop taking more money. If they don't have enough money to finish development at this point they are only proving that this project was servealy miss managed at best or a total scam at worst.

@LordofRaisins I mean you kind of have to understand that people who back it, back it because they like what they see. But also its funny that you say, you tell them that the stuff they like is never coming out and they waste their money and somehow you dont expect them to get defensive? I mean you are more or less insulting them. What does it matter to you if they spend their money on something. The thing i get tired of seeing is just people wanting to bash on things that other people like. Long as it doesnt hurt someone else who the eff cares. Its not really surprising you tell someone that something they enjoy is a scam and they dont like you that much for it.

@VLK_Static Sorry you misunderstood me. I don't tell warn people about this game because I want to bash something they like. I honestly just feel bad for them. It's clear that people really really want this to come out. And it's a bit sad that they it doesn't seem like they will get a chance to enjoy it in its full promised scope. While your right that it doesn't affect me how people spend their money. Sometimes it's needed to try and help pull someone away from getting trapped in a sunk cost fallacy. In the end I think news stories like this are necessary and we have reached a point where people need to be wary of this project. As I've said they have enough money to finish the game and really make it shine. The feature creep is choking the life out of this project. People deserve this game. However they don't deserve to keep throwing money at something that doesn't show any signs of delivering within their life times.

I get the big ole joke show going on at star citizens expense, but I don't understand why people are so antagonistic. In what way is it a failed game? They've got a very specific goal that a specific subset of people want to see and have invited people along for the ride. A lot of people really enjoy the community and watching the development. Sure it's not fleshed out and the timeline is ridiculous and likely will never be completed, but the content they've pulled out of it along the way has been pretty good for that specific demographic it is targeted at. The way I see it is they're making a thing that some people like and it's not for everyone and that's not a bad thing. I'd much rather see that than another bland AAA series that recycles the same 2 game mechanics over and over year after year

@3d3d3d also would point out that plenty of people 'have' the game (albeit about a half a game) and they look forward to the new features once every few months. Very much similar to 90% of early access titles out there

I hate how these people talk about star citizen as if they took the money and ran. Honestly, anyone who expected a development time of less than 5 years wasn't paying attention. This game is attempting something never done and isn't taking shortcuts in quality to get there. The quality and scope were so vast that producers didn't want to fund it. That's why he turned to crowdfunding to begin with. While there were problems with communication at one point, now, there are not many game development companies that are as open as to what they are working on/spending time and resources on as RSI. The scope and quality require time. I'd rather wait years and get the game that they set out to make than a rushed same as every other game. Most of the past years were spent creating the systems and engine/infrastructure capable of accomplishing the scope, detail, and interactivity that star citizen is . RSI had to reinvent how a lot of things( such as syncing animations) in the game from industry norms in order to reach the high bar they've set. That means even experienced designers are entering new territory. I'm not saying there haven't been mistakes that caused delays. However, through all of that, is a game that holds the potential to reach the next level of what video games are capable of. Even if the game itself is outdated by the time its done, I believe the infrastructure and solutions designed by RSI can and will change the industry. as an additional note, lets also point out that when you fund a project; you are not 'buying the game'. There is a marked difference between preordering a product and funding a product that I think a lot of gamers miss when helping fund games.
