TAKE A KNEE! The US Military has hit a new low while attempting to use Twitch as an armed services recruitment platform. In the COOLEST of fashions, they ran a fake contest on their own Twitch channel! Neat! It featured a clickable link to win an Xbox Elite 2 controller which aaactually just sent participants to a recruitment page, whoopsies! In response to the dubious act, U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said recently that she plans to file a measure to stop the military from using games and esports to recruit people. Sure, some might be willing to give the military the benefit of the doubt... I mean, not like this is the first weird scammy thing the army’s ever done, RIGHT? THE FUCKING ARMY attempted to... scam people? ...Into joining the Army? HUH?! And they thought this would somehow WORK?! I'd be in Basic Training like "Sir, where is my special Xbox controller, Sir!"
How are they recruiting children?? You have to be 18 to serve and zero chance any real commitment is being exchanged via online links. Recruiters definitely use less then truthful tactics at times and something should be done about that. But this is clearly just advertisement and I can think of plenty, much worse things that we allow to be advertised on tv and frequently visited web pages. It’s not a political statement to serve. That a dangerous narrative to try to drive by itself. Like it or not we’ll always need soldiers, marines, airmen, and sailors.
@maseter1313 It's more than an advertisement, they're running fake contests to drive people to recruitment pages. It's shady and deceitful regardless of how ineffective I have to imagine it is. Banning them from streaming is doing something about "less than truthful" recruitment tactics. They're streaming purposefully to reach a young male audience, many of whom will be under 18, to foster a one-sided, positive imagine of the military and drive recruitment. 18 year olds can't drink, but they can sign-up and potentially die for the cause of US empire? I can't think of worse things advertised on tv or twitch, but certainly not by the US government.
They mentioned it in the video, so I have to mention that I hate that people see the "highway of death" as a US war crime. The Iraqi army was doing a fighting withdrawal (retreating while shooting and not actually surrendering), which means they were still valid targets. It was also a coalition operation (remember the Gulf War was a UN sanctioned action where the Iraqis were the aggressors) that involved France, Canada, and the UK. The fact that people tried to make a big deal out of CoD and claimed they were trying to "rewrite history" shows a complete lack or willful ignorance of the actual history.
@Zachrionalpha They were told to retreat and leave all their heavy equipment behind. They chose to leave under fire. If they hadn't taken their T-55s, T-72s and BMPs with them, they would've been left alone. Frankly, it wasn't even that deadly. Less than 10% of the people in the vehicles died. There were more destroyed vehicles than casualties.
Military recruiters are absolute evil. They relentlessly harass and stalk teenagers. Getting any information out of someone is all they need to bombard them with demands to sign up. Anyone who put in their information on that fake contest recruitment page is in for pure hell via a pushy asshole that will call 40 times a day and show up at your job.
