The awkward "let's player" editing style on this was hilarious. Made gaming news actually fun to watch.
The game has been out for years, at half the retail price, it goes on sale for 10 bucks every other weekend on steam. Everyone has had their chance to purchase the game for well below a fair price. The content in ark (despite its downfalls) is worth more than half the junk on steam for a similar price.
Except now they're asking for significantly more than the fair price. They want full AAA $60, for an indie game. A game that again, has to be pointed out that has a paid DLC before it even released! A not cheap DLC either, at $20.
I quickly removed the game from my wishlist when I learned about the paid DLC, and now this new absurd cash grab has guaranteed I will never send them a cent. They make EA look good for crying out loud.
The game has brought so much to the survival genre and many unique features did not exist before. The game is huge and has tons of content. Ive played since day one on console. The $60 version includes 3 dlc maps which one of has already been sold for $20. So $30 for the game $20 for dlc we are at $50. They offer two more maps with the full title plus everything they have worked on for the last few years. This is a game you put thousands of hours into and if that is not worth your money what is? The public has had years to purchase at a lower cost and always informed it will be a full title launch. plus you can still get it on sale. Do developers not deserve support? Have you seen the garbage they sell on steam? Why did you wait to buy, the information has been out there? People will never be happy when there is a price increase, but your lying if you think you were not offered ample time to explore the title for a reasonable exchange. I love ark, I think its worth every penny, and I'll still order the special edition. Entitled gamers, games use to be 8 hour campaign for full price, that would be absurd these days and people still complain.
Are they charging people who have already purchased the early access version of the game? If not, I think it's totally fine. The game is a huge success. Yes, it's buggy and I personally don't enjoy it, but plenty of people have sunk hours upon hours into that game and I think that they would argue that they definitely got their money's worth.
If the argument is against the bugs: Mass Effect Andromeda.
The game has tons to do and has definitely been out for long enough that the supporters of the early access have already snagged their copy (I'm just assuming that's how early access works; again, they never come out so this is new to me.) There are plenty of AAA titles that have been released with less to do and just as many bugs, but their namesake helped them avoid becoming a hot dumpster fire (AC: Unity and Mass Effect: Andromeda come to mind here) even though they were controversial. After a quick Google search (sorry but that's all I've got), Unity (and Rogue) sold 10 million units upon release and Andromeda sold 1 million units. Ark seems to have proven itself worth the price tag if gamers are going to sink as much time into it as they already have.
Maybe $60 is steep, but I don't think the arguments being made are good ones. What truly makes a game worth $60 as opposed to $30 or $40? (Maybe voice acting which I suppose this game probably doesn't have much of)
For that price you better give me a AAA experience, which it really isn't. That said, I used to have no problem with games increasing their prices in early access after adding content and optimization. I bought Minecraft and Kerbal Space Program in very early development and the prices have gone up significantly. That way of doing business I actually enjoy, because early access customers aren't investors in games they buy. So some form of protection is actually nice.
Unfortunately Early Access results in so many games having run their life cycle even before they get released, I really hold back my purchases. Fewer and fewer games are getting finished, especially in the multiplayer range. And I want it to stop. How many survival or zombie games have we seen in the past, and how many actually became good games you could buy as a polished finished product. So I don't like to be punished because I wait now, at least not with a 100% markup.
Actually the state of Ark right now is exactly what I expect of a AAA experience at launch now days. Have you been paying attention to what buggy pieces of crap AAA games are releasing like these past few years? I say Ark's new price is perfectly fine relative to other buggy games that are released at the exact same price. I just wish I would have bought it during early access...
Wtf was up with the editing in this video? Seems like they're trying a Funhaus-esque style of editing, but in my opinion the cuts felt super forced and awkward, the only one that seemed to fit in to me was Adam doubling.
I was just thinking it kind of looked like a funhaus video, but at least they are trying to mix it up a little and not just do the same thing until they run their shows into the ground.
That close-up on Adam though.
I find it interesting that it's "fans" of the game (ie, people who already have it) that are apparently getting all riled up about this. As someone who hasn't touched the game at all, I'm just gonna see another $60 game on the shelf and won't bat an eye. This is just one of those scenarios where people are getting pissed off "on behalf of" other people who mostly don't care.
On the other hand, if the game is as buggy and unfinished as people are saying, that's something to get annoyed about. Not so much the price as much as the fact that it's being officially released this before it should be.
Oh noes! they doubled the price!!!! Oh, wait i already bought it. Who gives a fuck?
