The problem for Eidos and Square is that Deus Ex had a very long time to sell all those units and, while it wasn't a sleeper hit, it did take some time to sell all those units and did so more by word of mouth that the story was really good and playing the game in different ways felt very different (with plot points only open to you if you played the game one or another way) - hence more replayability. The increased number of people posting their own full playthroughs has probably also impacted sales a little though the game itself deserves most of the blame for the lower units and (apparently) shorter sales tail IM(NS)HO.
Story matters... just look at Telltale... they depend entirely on that and make a lot of money despite criticisms about their ability to tell stories! Clearly they are still better than a lot of things out there where people don't even both to complain about it any more e.g. FPSs and people actually praise games that actually have any story at all e.g. Battlefield 1!!
Yes I agree. The pre-order system was terrible.
Just saying, a prequel after 7 years isn't a reboot.
I would guess most people haven't played the first two or even heard of them, so maybe some people have two more games to play. Just looking on the bright side.
About Gus's "If I'm not getting Deus Ex, you're not getting Kingdom Hearts" comment, I know it's a joke, but just saying, Deus Ex made a comeback from the early 2000s. Kingdom Hearts still hasn't quite yet aside from that "2.89: Second-Last Episode of Chapter 4 to the Seventh Power: Twice Removed: Interlude" bullshit
