Fustrum Culling and Occlusion Culling is an everyday thing for me.
Oh you know Jack and Ryan have heard of these!
I learned about occlusion culling years ago from a Skyrim mod that added shitloads of occlusion planes to various interior locations to improve performance drastically. It was dope, and was one of my earlier windows into game dev.
Fustrum Culling is my favourite Battle Royale game.
I have heard frustum culling before when I was at college.
Learned a fair amount there, which is why I can understand all of those fanty words Ryan uses when he does stories on the know that talk about how games run or are displayed on screen.
Learned about frustum culling (and some of the other main ones) when I was a kid and a bunch more more obscure types when I did a course in computer graphics at university - our project was building a graphics engine to do a fly-through of a teapot (damn that stupid teapot! :) I look back on that time with happiness because it was literally an endless project since we were never going to have time to build a fully-fledged engine and needed as many ways to speed up the rendering as we could find / think of... much more interesting than what most programmers have to deal with.
P.S. And, I'm sorry Polygon, but this is your fault and if you're worried about getting mocked for not knowing some basic graphics engine techniques then you're going to get mocked for not doing your homework and by programmers generally if you don't understand that they will mock anything that seems lame just like everyone else on the internet - the media particularly because you are so visible - just like with AAA titles; visibility has it's price as well as its reward.
Ugh this is the worst type of 'controversy'. Please everyone just let it go.
This is the epitome of the internet; creating a "controversy" over four people making sarcastic tweets.
nice belly button ring micha!
For reference, probably every single game available on Steam and consoles in the last several years uses at least a certain degree of frustum culling, so unfortunately for that writer it's one of those things that's just way too obvious for someone not to poke fun at.
That said, Horizon probably does have some pretty sweet unique optimizations that they use, so frustum culling aside, it's still a graphically impressive game.
