People got their hopes way too high, a main game will come to switch but not for a little while. It's sad but not all that surprising. Ultra S/M will be the last on 3ds I am betting while the next gen will be Switch.
Everyone who thought Main Game Pokemon was coming to switch year one set their expectations to damn high. 2019 is going be my prediction for Main Game Pokemon on switch, take a year off to develop it. Make Pokemon Bank work at launch or launch window, get their transitions ready for competitive play, and all in all polish the game.
Every switch owner is just gimmie gimmie gimmie right now to make their switch purchase worth it. Your not going get all the big nintendo properties immediately off the start calm down.
Just throwing this out there: this isn't the first time that Nintendo and Game Freak released a sequel Pokemon game a short time after its predecessor. The first Black and White was released in North America in March 2011, and Black 2 and White 2 were released in October 2012. That's 19 months. Other examples, like Emerald (following Ruby and Sapphire), and Platinum (following Diamond and Pearl) were released at least 2 years after the predecessor, if not more.
All in all, it's really not surprising that we're getting Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (still trying to decide if the names are really that stupid or not) only a year after the original Sun and Moon, especially if this is being billed as a direct sequel in the same way that Black 2 and White 2 were sequels. What will really help justify these sequel games further is if we are in fact getting a brand new story and if there are added features to improve up the experience, such as having your lead Pokemon run alongside you in the world (which is what I think we saw with that Wingull flying over the player's head as he ran uphill).
I agree 1 year in between for a sequel scares me that Majority of the game will be the same, i see some variation like New Alolan Forms of Johto Pokemon (With G/S coming to Eshop) of course new plot points explaining the Necrozema Fusion (Colress? Which explains his random appearance in the first game, Dna Splicers make comeback?) and maybe in this alternate story we have gyms? Dont know.
Also the word Ultra now has meaning in Pokemon with Ultra Beasts, just like Mega will forver be tied to mega evolution, So Ultra is our first clue of where this game will take us story wise.
Also on the topic of partner pokemon following you, Theres models of pokemon in the game for a reason, I am always skeptical when my friend brings it up but, i will beleive when i see it, that could be a driving difference in these games who knows.
Oh right. Ultra Beasts. Duh. Now suddenly Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon doesn't sound quite as stupid as titles.
Seriously... NINTENDO DOES NOT OWN POKEMON!!! It has a STAKE in the Pokemon Company, but does not fully decide what Pokemon does. Plus only less than 3 million people have a Switch so far, and by the time Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon come out, the amount will probably not be over 10 million, which at least every Pokemon game has sold. The reports of the Switch shortage that might come helps with this prediction. Also, as stated by other comments, Game Freak has NEVER changed consoles Mid-Gen before, and just porting a 3DS game to the Switch isn't easy. There are two screens on a 3DS and one on a Switch, the software does not work on both. Gamefreak probably is trying to make/find an engine to use... IF they are going to chose the Switch as their next machine.
Also, IF they only came out with Pokemon Star for the 3DS, where would be SO less hate on the game, that people would only care that it isn't coming to the Switch instead that it 'apparently' looks like a rehashed Sun and Moon. The First 4 Gens had Rehashed games! And people were still excited over those. Black and White had Sequels which was different, and these will probably be a mix of both. They will probably have an event(s) that are different than what set up Sun and Moon and leads into this different story and world. This will probably fill in details that were left out or unknown from the Sun and Moon. This will probably expand on alternate realities that the Delta Episode in ORAS started.
Calm down people, if Game Freak want's to develop a game for the Switch, they will do it. And they will put so much care into it. Not a port from a different kind of console.

Yay for Gold and Silver ^-^
6/5/17: We hope there's either a remastered Pokken, a remastered version of two previous games, or a new version of Sun and Moon.
6/6/17 There's a remastered Pokken AND a remastered version of two previous games, AND TWO new versions of Sun and Moon. THIS IS SO DISAPPOINTING.
To be honest i've been waiting on Pokémon Gold and Silver to get ported to the 3DS virtual console for a while now. Really happy to now be able to play so many Pokémon games on my 3DS alone.
Seems like another case of misplaced expectations. Seriously, the only thing that been trying to get me all riled up about Stars in the first place was The Know. The only disappointing news that's come out of this from my perspective is the names of the next pokemon games, hurr durr ULTRA. Though I guess I'd also be disappointing in them if they were both just mildly updated/different remakes, like Yellow/Emerald. But based on the fact that there's two, I'm gonna assume it's another black/white 2 situation... which will likely end up causing confusion and lower sales due to the name "Ultra" not clearly indicating a sequel. Nintendo, why do you name things the way you do...
I have a love/hate relationship when it comes to Nintendo. I have reliably bought their handheld stuff going all the way back to the Gameboy Color (my mom wouldn't let me get the original Gameboy), but I've never been a huge fan of their consoles. The Gamecube I had for Smash Bros, but then the Wii had dumb controllers which turned me off and Smash Bros was released on the 3DS so I have no reason to buy a Wii-U. Personally I don't mind that Pokemon isn't coming to the Switch because I don't want to have to buy a system that is constantly out of stock.
Nintendo is really working hard to make me not want to buy a switch. I'm really thinking I'll just get a new 2DS XL and wait a year for switch.
