Microsoft killing LINUX minecraft... "ooops by accident"
Nobody is mentioning that Sony AND LINUX missing from 'Better Together".
No political barrier by Linux- just Microsoft refusing to allow Linux
You're forgetting the Java based players who haven't switched to the W10 Edition yet. It's not just PC players this update is aimed at, it's W10 Minecraft. It's nothing political about the linux version, it's everything to do with their branded version. The java version still exists and will most likely be supported to an extent, but it probably won't be as active as the Better Together version of the game that all the other platforms are getting. I would assume that Sony is getting this update as well, but the specific cross play feature will not be enabled.
It's is entirely political - Microsoft have been trying to crush Linux for decades and stopping Linux from having Minecraft is a huuuuge win for them, especially for killing off the free modding community in favour of their paid content (and cut from other paid mods)... of course it is the end of Minecraft as an ongoing concern but then again this game has been so solidly modded that I suspect that everything, apart from Crossplay, will be or has already been for years a part of Minecraft.
That Microsoft are killing their Golden Goose is clear to everyone else but then they are also very bad as seeing the inevitable cf Linux, the rise of the cloud and the marginalisation of their entire PC on every business persons desk.
Plus ca change, plus c'est le meme.
It kind of seems like Sony is playing right into Microsoft's positioning strategy. Microsoft is trying to make themselves seem very pro-gamer after all the early Xbox One criticism so it makes sense for them to champion crossplay since it can be perceived as taking a hit (not forcing friends to join the same platform to play --> lower sales) because it's just more fun that way. Sony then looks like they're keeping gamers apart to force them onto their platform, which comes across as anti-gamer corporate nonsense.
i only come to see mica.
funny.... i see Mica and turn it off
The only thing I can really say looking at the business of it is that Microsoft stands to gain more than Sony does. If crossplay happens. Xbox players get the much larger of pool of Sony players to play with. Sony players get a much smaller pool of Xbox players to play with. But, because politics, I kind of imagine Sony sees it as a lose-lose situation. They don't agree to crossplay, Xbox makes them seem the anti-gamer group, but at least everyone is mutually unhappy with that aspect. They agree to crossplay, their gamers are happier, except one issue for them, Xbox gamers are happier too. To give Sony one benefit of the doubt, I've always known them to state their desire for quality standards. In this case they may have the excuse that Xbox won't provide the mutual standard of quality connectivity to ensure crossplay isn't just an ordeal the moment a player from another console device is involved. I'm no expert on the technicalities that would make crossplay possible, but that always seemed to be an aspect of it Sony might concern themselves with. None the less, I say, make crossplay happen. Let the world play together. Can the console war BS and let all gamers rejoice regardless of platform.
The stupid thing about this is that it was Microsoft doing the blocking last generation... because they were winning... how can these two companies be so short-sighted... or do they honestly believe they will each win every coming console generation war?!? (Yeah, I know, console generations are gone and won't, I'll believe THAT when I see it (and crossplay) happen a.k.a. Never).
I can understand why Sony and Microsoft wouldn't want cross play in the past. Their goal is to make
THEIR customers happy, not other companies. That's kinda the way it's always been, but the difference I see now is that there are more inputs. Switch and PC are bringing something to the table too. If it's a potluck for two, the one who brings more is getting the short end of the stick, but get a big enough group potluck together and everybody shares something. In this case, Sony can convert players to their console for the exclusives without having to worry people about being alienated from friends on other platforms.
Where's ashley at? Mica is getting tired
the way I interpret the "children safety" stance is they've seen/dealt with shitty high school "online bullying" crap from games like CoD where in the end police agencies get involved. from what I've seen from random youtube content about these incidents it's not always a quick and easy process, you add to that having to communicate with you're business rivals and that will add to the time it will take to get IP information, chat logs or w/e to the authorities. sounds like i headache I'd want to avoid too, or at least put in the time to set up a proper department for these somewhat uncommon occurrences.
minecraft and rocket league are very kid centric games. mortal combat is rated M and FF11 required a certain level of skill and attention span thereby drawing a more mature player base. not to mention big MMO's like ff11 and 14 have their own GM teams to deal with the above mentioned type of drama. yes they have proven are capable of crossplay but these examples don't give any credence to their "children" excuse being "just an excuse."
