F.U.C.K...
Goodbye, Dragon Age. From old school throwback to Mass Effect clone to empty world with 5 hours of story to... whatever they do to its corpse next.
For the longest time, I was of the mentality that we "vote with our wallet" by abstaining from buying microtransactions. And while there's still some small value in that act, the entire philosophy gets broken by whales like that $15K spender. Whales vote for us, or rather, their votes carry massively more weight than our own. It was never "voting" to begin with, and I was naive to think they'd value their users equally...
anyways, single player's not gonna die. Things change. But the more things change, the more things stay the same. Some people are just in the process of learning that is all.
I wonder how many of the whales are using fraud to spend all that money. Anyways, this will work it self out eventually, most people don't spend much on micro transactions and at some point they will just stop buying the games that are lazy shameless cash grabs. I doubt even the biggest whales can make up for the losses from only selling a few thousand copies of a game that cost tens of millions to make. At that point all the multiplayer only games will go free to play and games with a strong single player will start to come back.
Maybe the solution here is to let the $60 price model go away, if bigger games, the ones that provide fifty hours or more of good content cost more, and people where willing to pay without being babies about it that would push them to make more. They could also start putting solid multiplayer experiences with them, like in Mass Effect 3, that was basically tacked on using all the same assets and levels from the game so it couldn't have cost all that much, and it was great.
