Aw man I've been following this mods progress for months now! This really hurts to hear! Fingers crossed something like this doesn't happen to The Frontier for Fallout: New Vegas.
I'm kinda sad about this, as Fallout 3 doesn't run on my virtual machine (damn Games for Windows Live) It would have been so cool to experience a version of 3 that is playable.
Bethesda yet again proving to big mod projects they need to make it and then release it all before Bethesda hear anything about it... Bethesda are clearly waving a bit stick around as there are plenty of mods and total conversions that use old assets by using transfer tools or requiring them to be in the original install directories* (requiring that people have the original game) - yes, this can be hacked but then again so can anything so who cares, if you pirated the game you already broke the law - blaming mods for that is stupid and if it's because you are adding value then clearly it is the dev's fault that anyone ever pirates their games (which is a stupid thing to say ipso facto it's not the mods fault) - on top of which if the devs created more content as DLC, etc. then there would be fewer mods because the market would be more satisfied; c.f. Minecraft mods - people are happier with vanilla Minecraft on console than on PC because console has more mods provided by the devs.
*Transport Tycoon is an example of one of these that has been out there for years - still is although mods have now replaced every single asset out there so there is no need to use the originals but then again your game doesn't look or sound anything like the original if you go that far!
The Know did a news story on how releasing before the lawyers get there can land creators in the legal deep end. Some poor souls have paid dearly thinking if they just release before the DMCA notice they can't be touched.
As did they about DMCA's Sky who did not so much (other than a change of title) and there are plenty of ways of releasing things anonymously... cf Bitcoin (creator unknown despite a very large number of well connected people wanting that knowledge...)
I'd cough up some cash for the Capital Wasteland mod if it was in the Creation Club, hope Beth/Zenimax realize that.
