A bunch of European countries are all out of patience for video game industry giants and their anti-consumer practices, and they're not going to take it anymore!
As a Belgian, it is so apparent that in Belgium a lot of the politicians don't get the gaming market. Or at least the types of lootboxes that are out there. I think the Overwatch lootboxes are completely different from FIFA as you have all the heroes to play with and just get different skins for them. Also Battlefront II got out from under this law because at the time of evaluation they disabled their lootbox system, which is ridiculous! There was a lot of headline news about this in Belgium and it's just so clear that the gaming industry in Belgium is still considered to be this deviant subculture that most of our population doesn't understand.
The person serving the prison time is the CEO and any other people considered complicit in breaking the law - they are also very likely to not be allowed to be on the board of directors of any business operating in the EU for years after they leave jail... so they are really not d*cking around; it's a case of comply or we ruin your life (something I am entirely happy with since they seem to think that they are above the law (Consumer law at that - we get enough of a rough deal as it is).
As long as some wierdo doesn't take the wording of these laws to the extreme and start trying to ban things like in-game randomized monster drops, I could see this being positve. But it's hard to say. It might just drive big gaming companies to try things even more obnoxious than loot boxes.
