Over the weekend some odd messages began appearing in some PSN users inboxes causing their consoles to be unusable! Here are some tips to avoid this issue until Sony patches the problem!
I read about this one twitter and it scared the hell out of me. I immediately checked my PS4, which was still working. I set it to private then and there.
I saw the video title and got worried because I got a message from a random account over the weekend that just said "hey". But I'm not too worried because I was able to play for a few hours after getting the message. Still going change my message settings though.

1st, it's not bricking, it's an overflow of the text data that the console can't render so it breaks vital parts of the system code. A normal factory reset wouldn't be able to fix it if it were truly bricked.
2nd, it's emojis that are causing the glitch. It's something to do with how they're encoded that the system doesn't understand.
3rd, most people have their consoles set to auto log in, which is why they think it bricks their system. If you don't auto login, you can pick a different account and it'll work fine (as several people have done this). This is further evidence that it's not a brick.
Lastly, while it is a good idea to set your privacy to friends or no-one, that's just a last ditch effort. I get that this is a PSA, but it's also devolving into the hysterical delusions of "IT'S BORKED! I HAVE TO SPEND $$ TO FIX!" when it's hardly even damaged.
Yes, it is a coding error (not that I know much about the specifics of it), but it's not a complete loss and there are ways to fix what went wrong that don't require specialized skills, knowledge, or tools. As I said, a factory wipe wouldn't normally be able to fix such a problem so it's still perfectly usable hardware. If you pay for PS+ (which 99% of people getting this system crashing message would likely have), you don't lose your saves even if you factory reset, granted you might have to download them from the cloud again.
Also, I found all of this information on said problem within an hour or so. Please think things through when you make a video like this. It doesn't take much to fan the flames of misinformation and especially when it's combined with hysteria.
@OniZonda1. so that's ddos right. not much of a computer guy but it sounds similar to that which from my knowledge wouldn't cause any permanent damage right?

@PaullewisoDDOS is a Distributed Denial of service. a DDOS is generally where a server is targeted with many request from computers located in a wide range of places. the clients a are usually apart of what we call a bot net. these computers are sent a command to ping a target server to effectively flood it with so many request that it either A breaks the servers or be renders it unaccessable by normal users. this is different in the fact that where the data is sent it is written to the system registry in a way that it forces the system to throw a null and power down.
they are using a modded console and sending an injection virus using a bug in the messaging app where the registry bit shifter does not fully resume standard level access. this allows for live registry editing at a administrative levelm the messages are just a carrier that triggers the sub-routine.
