@pollochicken22 they weren't only because sony wasn't reaching out to do cross play. they said they would, even though they never tried. also the networks were drastically different so the coding to make it possible probably wasn't easy. Now it's so easy, it can be "accidentally" turned on
@pollochicken22 some where but not as much, part of the reason for this is that it wasnt so easy, and in turn developers were not pushing for it nearly as much. some were pushing to at least try and make it work, but it wasnt to the extent it is today where the two systems are so similar that it is literally a feature which can accidentally be turned on for some games. Xbox at least has the reason that the two systems were fairly different from one another, and the online systems were rather different as well (for one thing xnox live was far more secure and well maintained than the playstation network), a somewhat flimsy excuse for saying no but at least it is more than what sony has now as an excuse. it also wasnt a feature sony exactly pushed hard for, they basically said they were willing to allow it, but didnt try to do anything about it them selves.
@captianShade it wasn't Microsoft so much as both of them. Sony was touting the fact that you could play online for free (until they realized they could charge for it and people would pay, even if they didn't want to). Microsoft was actively saying they didn't want to, but at the time the systems weren't the same. One was peer-to-peer, the other was host/client. Now, it's basically the same network code (voice chat obviously is slightly different, but overall a similar structure for both) and the game servers are the ones handling the matchmaking. It's kinda pointless to act like Sony isn't to blame when they were active participants in blocking it this whole time. They never attempted to do it, the players were the ones asking and the Sony tagline was "we've supported it for years, just look at PC and PS2 Final Fantasy XI" but they never once reached out to Microsoft to change anything. Last gen it was Microsoft that said it outright that they don't want to do cross play whenever they were asked about it being a possibility. Also, last gen was headed by a different guy. Once the Xbone rolled out, he stepped down and left everything in shambles. It took years for Xbone to gain back the support and they're still fighting to get approval around every corner. tldr, Sony was also blocking cross play, even if they never admitted it
@OniZonda Fair enough. Although the majority of people complaining about the lack of crossplay are people with Xbone and switch. Everyone I know who plays PS4 either don't want it or don't care myself included.
This argument annoys me. Sony offered working on cross play way back last gen.. Microsoft said no. Now Microsoft is trying to play the high ground.. Like "We are the good guys.. Sony dosnt want to play" and Sony is just saying "hmm Nah why would we? When you want to now when you didn't want to years ago.."
Your Honestly the only gaming news or anything along the line that have even brought this up. Goes to show why your the best!
People are saying that you need to sign up for an Xbox Live account to crossplay Minecraft using a Switch. If that's true - and if it's something that Microsoft is requesting for any network that crossplays with them - given that Xbox live user numbers are all they've really been publicly reporting for the last few years, it seems a little shady, and I can see why Playstation might not want to give their competitors that advantage. The fact is we don't really know what crossplay really entails for any of the companies behind closed doors, even outside of just 'the money'. But I find it weird that Todd Howard only talked about Sony, and not whether say, crossplay between Playstation and PC might be a thing. Or crossplay between Xbox PC users and Steam users - which Microsoft doesn't currently allow. It seems a little odd that this conversation has just become about console crossplay between competitors, especially when it seems like Sony first pioneered crossplay between Playstation and PC, and have continued to support it this generation with games like Paragon and Fortnite. Didn't Epic even say that crossplay is fine with their games when it comes to Playstation and PC, so it must be 'something else' that means they don't want to do it with consoles? And I find it really weird that Sony is now being slammed as being 'anti-consumer' for this one thing, when they have done and are continuing to do the most pro-consumer, pro-gamer thing I can think of by continuing to create massive, single-player games even though it's apparently 'economically complicated' at the moment. Like, I think crossplay would be a nice thing if people had it, but I feel like it's a weird thing for people to be *so* upset about. But then I don't really play much multiplayer, so it doesn't really bother me either way, I guess. Just my two cents.
@Sharkwaiter yeah. I have the switch and I did have to make an account but the switch will be rolling out their online access fees soon so Switch users will not pay for Live access but will have their Switch account tied with a Live account. If that made any sense I can’t read much on RT mobile app.
@oakestates Plus Minecraft is different because it is a Microsoft Game so it makes sense for it to be needed in order to play. Epic Games Accounts are needed to play cross play in fortnite. It just has to do with who made the game.
But will there be cross-play between PC and X-Box? I want to play on PC. My best friend doesn't have a really high-end PC, but he has an XBONE. Without cross-play, if we want to play with each other, he has to play on PC with the settings turned down.
I like Ashley's tee. It's the only beacon of light from this news segment, considering I thought there was going to be cross-platform play for tons of the new games that exist on all platforms anyways. *cough* call of duty *cough*
