It feels like what the devs are saying is:

The scope has diverged greatly from the original concept and the team is experiencing a large amount of burnout. As we are in a can't see the forest situation, we are having much of the team take a break and work on other assets to help them get back the creativity the had at the start. We have a solid return time set and, using the vision of the demo, a reset scope in mind that we think we can deliver in 18-24 months from now.

I may be off the mark but this is the between the lines that I get.
