@woard the law they're enforcing basically says that the manufacturer has to positively show that you broke something in order to void your warranty. that's why your phone has a little sticker inside that bleeds ink when it gets wet. then they have proof that you mishandled it and aren't required to replace your device. the manufacturers are in no way required to fill every BS warranty claim or fill warranties when somebody bricked their device with bad firmware. they simply have to demonstrate that's the case instead of rejecting your warranty request out of hand.

@DavidtheWavid this has been a huge deal for farmers, especially (which have rather large lobbies). John Deere has been doing shady stuff like locking the firmware on their tractors so that only they can repair them *at all* so that the farmer has to call an authorized repair person to schedule a time to drive 3 hours out to come replace a part on their tractor. They've even been trying to use DMCA blocks on circumventing IP protections (DRM) to punish farmers who put new firmware on their tractors to get them working again. The old law they mentioned in the video was originally put in place to prevent auto manufactures from essentially enslaving all mechanics (but the wording was generic) , and now the FTC has decided to start enforcing it.
