I always viewed Kickstarters or crowd funded games as pretty much lost money. I'd invest if I was really interested and wanted to support it, but ultimately took the view that the money was gone and may never become anything. I'd invest only what I could afford, or lose without worry. That way if it does fail to meet it's goal I'm not going to be too annoyed.
But saying that so far all those I have backed have came out (Ravaged, Nekro, Wasteland 2). Still waiting on ones still being developed (Survive the Nights, Crowfall and Star Citizen). I am most impressed with how quick Star Citizen has progressed in terms of an actual playable build from the early Hanger module, which is now the multiplayer experiance in the last 2.0 build.
I love the process and means in which Crowd funded games can be made, when they aren't always able via traditional means. But it's always a wild west in terms of what may actually happen for a lot of them. I hope this actually changes soon and we can have far more stable process and get far more great things from it.
My only regret was not being able to join in the funding of Lazer Team. But next RT project I'll sell a kidney. :P
I really hope some kind of accountability is put in place to help these become more trustworthy, because I get the feeling I'll be using kickstarter at some point for projects when I'm able to start them.
This is why I don't fund any kickstarters from small companies I have yet to trust. I already hate that I've bought some games in pre-release. Example: Damned. Shitty and abandoned.
I was like Ha I haven't put any money on any of these game till they said mighty number nine and also how much of star citizen money do you think go to Stripes and beer they could get a lot for that money!
I don't get why this guy can't sue his partners for embezzlement if they stole the money, they clearly broke the law if that's the case.
Apparently the business contract was written in a way that the partners were listed as Contractors, which makes it difficult from what others have been saying to sue as it limits their liability. Plus, the money was less then $5000. By the time you calculate lawyer fees, time, and just the stress involved, it would be economically unfeasible.
Again, I am not an expert or a U.S. citizen, so I do not know the law, this is from the "armchair lawyers" on Reddit.
This has been my own running explanation for Star Citizen delays for the last year. The old Hookers and Blow rigmarole!
I really have to disagree, they are not kinda awesome. They screwed over Eric so hard.
"How would you mismanage all of your project's money?"
Actually, my kickstarter project would be about a game where you're a game dev trying to make a kickstarter project game, and then you can try and spend all of your money with hookers, strippers, and all kinds of blow before they find out, OR actually finish your game - so it's a multiple choice kind of game.
I backed code hero. Still sour about that.
I backed Mighty No. 9. I'll let you know how salty I am about that if it ever comes out.
When Bender makes a game company.
Imma make my own video game! With blackjack and hookers, in fact, forget the video game
Red light district simulator?
