I almost preordered this game. I was going to buy it from Amazon tomorrow. But call me whiny, I don't want to give them my money anymore. Think I'm getting it used.
If anything, they have atrocious timing. The game is on such a razor's edge right now, balancing between people getting really immersed in it and enjoying the free-exploration, and people who have been waiting for years and are finding some of their expectations to be disappointed. This announcement is just another nail in the coffin of the game--it would've been better to just not say anything and give the game a chance to become popular before dropping the bad news. That would've been disingenuous, but way more pragmatic.
The one thing keeping me going with NMS is that I was lucky enough to get it about 4 days before the release. Played through it, wasn't hugely impressed but as soon as the day 1 patch hit it changed entirely. Now I've played an additional 20 hours approx and keep hoping all my niggles will be fixed in (unpaid) patches.
What exactly did the day one patch change?
@Glyphwright Inventory management was the biggest thing. Beforehand you could only carry about a tenth of what you can now so it meant a lot more travelling back and forth. Other things like rarity of minerals, there wasn't any space-station variety and the worlds seemed all fairly similar. Made a massive difference imo.
i know a lot of things were promised for NMS but even with out all these extra features, i still bought the game and im loving it
I'm calling it: Sean Murray will be the next Phil Fish
I like the game. I do. As it is, it's fun. Worth $60? Hell no. I'd probably regret if I'd purchased it for $30 even.
This game is 100% an Alpha game. They weren't ready to release it, but they'd already pushed it back by more than a full year. Though it'd be much better if they pushed it back another, or at least said "Hey, we fucked up. It's not ready for full release yet, but we can give an Alpha. As a thank you for understanding, it's only $40 for the next month, and now a playable Early Access game."
But the amount of missing content, the lack of depth, the empty promises is absolutely and disgustingly deplorable. The only way they can fix this is to pull a GTA V and do nothing but free DLC. From this point on, any "DLC" is just content that should have already been in the game.
I'm sorry. I really love(d?) Hello Games; I've been eagerly anticipating it since its announcement eons ago. And I eagerly await it's actual full release. But this? This is embarrassing.
Maybe he's the next Phil Fish but the Free DLC isn't so much him reversing himself as Sony number crunchers coming over and saying "uh.....". I'm sure the developer doesn't want paid DLC but Sony is the money behind the project so a lot of it is their call. Sean Murray just had to eat his words because he was saying something he simply had no say over.
It's more of a Peter Molyneux controversy than a Phil Fish controversy.
so far im loving the game and if the dlc interests me i'll buy it, it kinda sucks that no man's sky is getting all this hate because of all the hype generated
well, it depends on the future. If they charge for dlc on stuff they had promised would be in the initial purchase, I completely understand the hate. now if they free patch the shit they said would be in, into the game, then pay dlc shit that is brand new and not talked about, ok yeah people should calm down.
that said, we must use the past to extrapolate the future, and so far, he has either misspoke at best or flat lied at worst.
literally telling ppl this "thing" would be in game on multiple occasions literally saying there would be no paid dlc then saying after ppl bought the game gotcha you have to pay for dlc thanks for that $60 you just wasted on maybe 20$ game. Ark: survival evolved is 25$ has way more content and alll of their dlc has been 100% free and it has dinos and multiplayer AND has community created mods for its game that can be use on private servers and a lot of the mods made have been used to improve the game its self with reward and compensation to the original modders. even though the terms and service would allow them to use those mods with 0 compensation this is an example of a good indie company. hello games is not.
It's less about the hype generated and more about promised features missing, the reddit list shows how many features that were not only promised, but also shown in game trailers. I don't like being promised and shown something and then not getting it, along with the rest of the internet and probably human race.
This makes me so mad, because this was the first 60 dollar game I bought that really did not seem to be worth it for a very long time. I have about 40 hours clocked into the game, but at the 30 hr mark, I was bored beyond belief. I named everything I could and done about everything the game had to offer. Only saving grace for this game was going to be free updates to fix up this empty shell of a game, but now seeing this, I don't know what to say anymore. I know some people say that this game is not for everyone, but I was one of those people that really love crafting/grindfest games, but some games make the grind enjoyable and rewarding. This game did not.
To be fair, you did play the game for over 30h, and that's well over what some other games offer. I'm not defending No Man's Sky because I don't really care about the game, but if you paid 60$ for 30 hours of "fun" in a game, then you probably got "more" than if you bought a 5-6 hours long narrative experience for the same price... right?
God, I'm not a fan of the state of the gaming industry nowadays.
I agree and disagree, Sure there are lots of games that have less than 30 hours of gameplay, but many of those are indie titles that don't cost 60 dollars. Of course I could be wrong and there might be triple A titles that are really crappy as well. The last Triple A game I bought was The division, and yes, it did not meet up to the standards that was promised, but it had enough content that when I did stop playing I felt like that 60 dollars was well spent. Now i'm assuming you are referring to the telltale story games, and sure 10 bucks for 1 hour doesn't sound good on paper, you are going in for a different experience, I treat those narrative games as a film, you pay 10-15 dollars to see a 2 hour movie. It's more of a narrative driven experience with minimal gameplay and less of a game. I'm not mad at the game because it's not the game I thought it would be, i'm mad at the game because it's not the game it advertised it would be and I'm sure most will agree with this part, a few lies. To respond to your statement, me personally, I would take 5-6 narrative games over No Man's Sky.
BS on their being tech limitations. The game literally is like 5-6 gigs. I'd take 30 gigs for ANY additions to this barren game.
...Storage space is not the only tech limitation in the world.
No but when a game is 5-6 gigs it implies there isn't much to it
"Proceduraly generated shit storm" is my new favorite phrase... too bad about the game though, I'd been optimistic about it until I noticed no one doing lets plays past the 1-2 hr mark and realized that that was the whole game :<

If you can give the guy ANY blame, which I personally think no one should, is that he basically said things that he couldn't have known would be true or maybe at the time he didn't know he'd be able to do. Like I said though, blaming him isn't actually fair unless it comes out that he actually did mislead people or did outright lie.
I don't see how he didn't lie or mislead people, i mean did you see the list of all promised things that are no where to be seen in the game?
I haven't read any of his interviews and haven't been following the game. That being said, promising more then he's able to deliver isn't the same as lying.
I kind of agree. We all need to remember that Hello Games is an indie studio. They are new to making games, launching games, and doing post-launch maintenance. They really don't know what they are doing. I'm sure him saying all DLC will be free was born from inexperienced naivety. He was probably literally told what he later was quoted as saying, which was that some of the updates may need to be charged for. Some of his plans may take so much work and time that they need to compensated or it just can't happen.
I actually think him announcing this so soon is good. To me, I feel like he made a starry eyed promise and then someone more grounded and experienced told him the truth and he came out and admitted his misunderstanding. I get the feeling that since this is such a quick turn around it is really him telling us literally as soon as he found out he may have been wrong in his initial statement. Which i respect him for a lot; if that's true.
A lot of the blame's down to Sony I'd think too. It definitely feels like HelloGames were forced into announcing it too early and giving it an unrealistic release date. The game's not what they wanted to release and I don't blame HelloGames for that.
