I have played something like 2000 hours of the main pokemon games across Diamond, Platinum, HeartGold, Black, Black 2, X, Y, and Omega Ruby. I consider myself a pokemon fan, with some asterisks. Based on what I hear about Pokemon Go, I have zero interest in playing it.
That said, I did, sort of (and jokingly), come to the conclusion that Pokemon Go could dominate the Earth, but the main clincher in my mind was that the combat mechanics of the main games were fully transferred over, which is not the case. The secondary (to me, but not likely to the broader audience) notion I thought could do it was if Nintendo worked to establish regional Pokemon Leagues, with badges, elite fours, and champions. The idea that you could take a vacation to Paris and spend that vacation battling gyms across the land to become champion of the Paris Pokemon League struck me as terrifyingly tempting. In the sense that one can be tempted to step off a cliff.
Thankfully, for the time being, it seems like Pokemon Go is a terribly shallow catch-'em-all moneymill. Which is not what I play Pokemon for. But it seems like that is exactly what everyone who remembers the games fondly wants out of Pokemon, so maybe that "dominate the Earth" notion is not so jocose after all.
Edit: Am I lame, comment-raters? Am I? Or is the lameness in you?
This news indicates that the bare bones but addictive game we have will grow, I do admit I was hoping for more human interaction, I live in a county town so only a handful are on the app so its not likely to run into someone using it, only curse at them when that addicted fuck takes my fucking gym ten fucking minutes after I just spent 5 potions hammering through the shit.
But I was hoping for members of the same team to be able to have a chat system to discuss stuff, perhaps an option for you to show up on the map for them.
But the game will develop and become better
I expect that the community will sort that stuff out for themselves -- at some point, the teams will create dedicated sites for communication. Even coordination, should the game give you need, down the line.
If it's making as many oodles of cash money as this video's sources estimate, Niantic has a comfortable cushion from which to add content, and (I think) a great deal of reason to want to keep adding features, not the least of which will be "make this a cool game." It's very possible that I will want to play this game, down the line, 'cause they may add all the stuff I'd hoped it would have. I will, at the very least, be keeping an eye on it to see what happens. The idea that the world could forevermore be a bit more Pokemon-centric is mildly satisfying.
I don't think Pokemon Go is supposed to fulfil your hopes and dreams as a Pokemon game. It is a free to play mobile game after all. That being said, a lot of people were probably hoping for more story, or at least more interaction with characters, which I doubt they will get. Hopefully something more like the badge system in the main games will be added. There's badges at the moment, but they're based on how many Pokemon you've caught, so adding badges based on level or the number of gyms you've fought at would be pretty cool.
On the topic of a chat system, though! If you've ever played Niantic's other game Ingress, you would know there's a chat system in that which works similarly to the Journal area of Pokemon Go in a way. So, it would post news publicly about gyms to all members in a 5km-20km radius (it can be changed in game) of said gym and there's also a chat option which could be split between all players and just players in your team. That's how Ingress' chat works anyway. I don't know if Niantic will use that same system but it works pretty well so I don't see why they wouldn't (it seems like they've used the portal data from Ingress when deciding where pokestops and gyms are, so it would make sense to use Ingress again)
It's ok. We know that change can be scary. For instance, with Pokémon Go, you may notice Pokémon in places there weren't Pokémon before, such as outside. Also, you may get red spots on your face because you're suddenly spending time in the sun. You'll probably feel awkward when you're walking around in public playing what many consider to be a game for kids. What you have to remember is that these changes are completely natural, and everyone else goes through them, too. Or at least, 5% of Android users and probably a similar proportion of iPhone users do.
Go has actually gotten me back into Pokemon! I'm now interested in getting either Sun or Moon when they come out.
That's the idea
